Subpoenas Issued in School Webcam-Spying Case, NY Times to Charge for Blogs

Highlights from this morning's other big tech headlines....
  • The Lower Merion School District in Pennsylvania recently attracted the attention of the nation's news media when school officials allegedly spied on students through webcams on school-issued laptops. Subpoenas have now been issued because of the incident, as federal investigators have reportedly requested a wide variety of computer records and security reports. [From: Philly.com]
  • The New York Times recently announced that it will begin charging for online content, but also said that non-subscribers would be allotted a monthly "quota" of articles that can be read for free. It now seems the site's blogs will be included in the pay scheme, but even some Times employees aren't sure whether or not blog posts will count toward the quota of free material. [From: Reuters]
  • ZD Net has unraveled a mysterious online case of dual identities. It recently discovered that InfoWorld blogger Randall Kennedy has been masquerading as the non-existent CTO of Devil Mountain Software, a company that has developed a reputation for openly criticizing Microsoft. Kennedy claimed he fabricated the persona of Craig Barth because he didn't want people to associate Devil Mountain with his outspoken and caustic blog personality. R.I.P., ethics, accountability, and transparency. [From: CNET]
  • According to the USDA, only 2-percent of the U.S. work force is employed in farming and agriculture. That lack of representation definitely doesn't apply to the online realm, though, because apparently more than 80 million people actively play that incredibly annoying Facebook game 'Farmville.' That number equates to over 25-percent of the U.S. population. [From: Mashable]
  • Last fall, Blizzard delayed the release of its StarCraft sequel, but a beta test version is currently being offered. It seems that some fans just can't wait any longer to blast some Zerg jerks, as people are actually paying hundreds of dollars through online auctions to play the beta. [From: GamePro]
