NTT DoCoMo Working on an Eye Phone

Just as touch screens are becoming commonplace on cell phones, a new prototype was recently unveiled at the Mobile World Congress 2010, in Barcelona. It'll make you do a double take -- in more ways than one.

According to the Telegraph, NTT DoCoMo has created a gadget that lets users navigate their cell phones by moving their eyes. Yes, you could make a call, play a song, or check a text message simply by looking to the left or right. Who needs fingers, anyway? To do this, the user wears a special pair of earphones that are equipped with electrodes. These electrodes pick up on the eyes' "electrical potential" (in case you're wondering, positive at the cornea and negative at the retina), which changes when you move your eyes. It even works when your eyes are shut.

While this prototype only functions with cell phones right now, it could potentially work with other devices like navigation systems. However, we're not sure how much we like the idea of drivers shifting their eyes from the road to take a call or check directions. It seems like we have enough problems on our roads already.
