Barbie Video Girl Makes Film-Making Look Good (Also Plastic-y)

Not since Todd Haynes's 'Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story' have Barbie dolls and film gone so well together. Mattel intends to fuse the two in a way that won't cause a lawsuit with its new Barbie Video Girl. The doll features a video camera hidden within the doll's necklace, an LCD screen on its back, and the capability to record up to 30 minutes of footage -- all of which can be viewed on a TV or computer monitor, and can be uploaded to and edited on Barbie.com.
Mattel's combination of toy and camera reminds us of Fisher-Price's PXL-2000, produced in the '80s and used to great artistic effect by Richard Linklater and Sadie Benning, amongst others. The Barbie Video Girl costs $50 and will be available in July, when we hope it will inspire a whole new generation of video auteurs. [From: GeekSugar]
