We've frequently written about robots that either intrigue us or make us want to cower under our desks for fear of a droid revolution. From
Ropid (the proto-fascist baby bot) to
Watson (the Jeopardy-smashing IBM supercomputer), we've been somewhat wary of where robot technology is heading. But our friends at Engadget have stumbled upon a gizmo that we can wholly get behind. Mike Dobson of RoboticSolutions has created
the Cubestormer, a robot built entirely from
LEGO Mindstorms parts that is able to solve a
Rubik's Cube in under 12 seconds.
Using toys to solve toy puzzles is a robot technology that makes our geeky parts say "wow" and our hearts say "aww," as we can't imagine the Army co-opting this one into some kind of battle-droid any time soon (unless the insurgents have taken to hiding their terrorism plans within 3-D puzzles). solving rubix is always a puzzle and now interestingly machine is solving it.
