White House Launches Report Card on Government Openness

Yesterday, U.S. Chief Technology Officer Aneesh Chopra and Chief Information Officer Vivek Kundra unveiled what they call the Open Government Dashboard, a sort of report card for government agencies and their abilities to meet objectives set forth in the Open Government Directive. The Dashboard makes it easy to see at a glance how the various agencies are progressing on initiatives to provide valuable data, maintain the integrity of that data, and perform basic services like hosting a publicly accessible Web site.

The dashboard gives individual scores, with explanations, of specific goals as well as overall rankings. Links to the department Web sites are provided, as are the milestones that the departments must meet. It's an interesting glimpse into one of the triumphs of the Obama administration, a move toward open, digital, data-driven records that could lead to greater government efficiency and transparency.
