Facebook is the Heidi Montag of the Internet. Just when you get used to one look, it undergoes some
radical plastic surgery and changes everything. The latest incarnation of the social network has got users talking -- and they don't have a lot of nice things to say. Some call it slower. Others say it's cluttered. And lots of people seem to wonder where their status-update feeds went. Backlash against Facebook redesigns is a
regular occurrence, of course, but this time some of the complaints seem legitimate.
Rolled out on the site's sixth anniversary, the redesign uses links along the left-hand side of the page to improve the visibility of commonly used features, like pictures and applications. It's also much easier to see which friends are online and available to chat. And new messages, requests and notifications now show at the top left of the screen -- making them more noticeable, at least in theory. But as is common with any major redesign, things haven't gone as smoothly as everyone would hope. "Dear Facebook," wrote user Chris Donahue in his status update. "Thank you for making what used to be the simplest tasks on your site infinitely more complicated."
For instance, viewing your friends' most recent updates has become a challenge. Some have complained they are only seeing one or two updates per hour. Others are occasionally told there are "no updates to show at this time." "My feed keeps saying the same thing as if nothing has changed at all," says user Rebecca Larsen Slusarchyk. "I keep getting a feed on people's status from yesterday and no one has even added a new comment." Mobile users aren't spared, either. Facebook for iPhone has proven sketchy since the redesign. Even the sync between Twitter and Facebook was temporarily broken (although it now seems to be working fine). Basically, since commonly used elements have been shuffled around the page, users are having trouble finding the very things Facebook was trying to make more accessible.
Getting Things Working
Old tricks, like viewing the 'Most Recent' feed instead of 'Top News,' haven't proven as effective as they used to be, but there are a couple of possible short-term solutions. Some people have had success by changing the 'maximum number of friends shown in the 'Live Feed' field from 250 to 9999 via the 'edit options' button at the bottom of the feed. Others, seeking an easier path, are changing their default page to
http://lite.facebook.com/ -- eliminating a lot of the clutter.
At first, it looks like Facebook completely removed your custom lists of friends entirely from the site. They're still available, but are no longer linked at the top of your news feed. Instead, click 'Friends' in the left rail; all your old lists will appear in a drop-down list.
Why the Never-Ending Redesigns?
To its credit, Facebook does try to improve the site with each redesign. But the reason for the constant changes is a bit more business-oriented. "I think, first and foremost, this change is about having users spend more time on the site," says Scott Olson, president of Mindlink Marketing. "What they're trying to do is have more real-time interaction among Facebook users -- and become less of an e-mail box... I think they're under pressure from Twitter -- -- where they're just becoming another feed."
So, there are some sound reasons for the change. But, because the site has become so personal to people (as a repository for their photos, conversations with friends, and contact lists), any sort of alteration elicits a knee-jerk reaction.

Most Annoying Things About Facebook
Sure, Facebook can be a lot of fun. It's a great way to reconnect with lost friends and to keep up with people on the fringes of your social circle. And as far as workday distractions go, there's nothing better.
It's hardly a perfect service, though. Minor aggravations add up fast and can drive you nuts. We've combed through the annoyances to find the ten annoyances that bug people the most.
Most Annoying Things About Facebook
Problem: Constant interface changes
Why it's annoying: Granted, innovation is necessary to avoid becoming stale, but sometimes you're better off leaving well enough alone. Facebook has radically overhauled its front page so many times that it's hard to keep count. Just as the anger dies down over one design, the site changes things again -- and confusion sets in. What's the difference between "News feed" and "Live feed"? And why can't Facebook remember which I prefer?
Possible solution: Sadly, there's not much you can do about this -- except wait for the next face-lift.
Most Annoying Things About Facebook
Problem: Inappropriate automated friend suggestions
Why it's annoying: Friend suggestions can be handy, but when Facebook tries to push an ex-girlfriend or boyfriend on you, it's kind of awkward. Similarly, if you've had a major falling-out with someone who has mutual friends, you're bound to see their face pop up in the 'suggestion' field at some point. It makes a clean break that much harder to get.
Possible solution: The little "x" to the right will make the suggestion go away forever. To prevent further frustration, you might want to also click "see all" and weed out any other offending names.
Most Annoying Things About Facebook
Problem: Never-ending game invitations
Why it's annoying: 'Farmville' and 'Mafia Wars' might be fun, but if you don't want to play them, the constant invites are infuriating. Many Facebook games are like Ponzi schemes; the way to succeed is to get more people playing. And once you've managed to filter out one game, another pops up.
Possible solution: It's not too hard to hide the requests and invitations for these games. Just click "Block this application" when you get the first invite. Then, hover over the updates that are clogging your news feed, and click "Hide" when the word appears.
Most Annoying Things About Facebook
Problem: Political fights
Why it's annoying: Between cable news and talk radio, it's hard enough to hide the squabbling between the left and the right. So when political debates fire up on Facebook, it's particularly annoying. All you want to do is see friends' pictures and learn what they're up to -- not eavesdrop on a debate over healthcare reform.
Possible solution: If you've got a friend who picks such fights in their status updates, you might be best off hiding them. You can still check in on them whenever you'd like, but you won't have opinions shoved down your throat.
Most Annoying Things About Facebook
Problem: Imported updates from Twitter
Why it's annoying: Tweets have their own language and shorthand, and if you're not familiar with the 140-character-or-less updates, it might look like someone had a hand spasm while typing. Facebook and Twitter are two entirely different services -- and forcing the two together feels like a poorly arranged marriage.
Possible solution: Once again, you're kind of stuck. Your best bet is to either embrace the language of the tweet -- or learn to selectively ignore posts.
Most Annoying Things About Facebook
Problem: No 'Dislike' button
Why it's annoying: A friend proudly mentions in a status update that she got a promotion. That's an easy thing to like. But what about when they announce they've been laid off? In its relentless drive to be cheery, Facebook hasn't given us the choice to quickly commiserate or disagree with someone.
Possible solution: There's an active lobbying effort to get Facebook to add a 'Dislike' button, with over 553,000 people members of a group specifically asking for one. Hopefully, the powers that be will listen to the protests.
Most Annoying Things About Facebook
Problem: People who 'friend' you too fast
Why it's annoying: Sometimes it's a person you've gone out with one time. Sometimes it's a coworker you only speak with occasionally. But odds are you've been 'friended' by someone you'd rather not have on your list. Technically, ignoring the request is an option, but that can create some real world tensions.
Possible solution: Your privacy settings can make this problem an easy one to conquer. You can block specific people from seeing status updates, photos and more by choosing 'custom' and black-listing them. Then, hide their updates from your news feed.
Most Annoying Things About Facebook
Problem: Stealth tagging
Why it's annoying: We all have horrifying childhood pictures or shots we wouldn't want to share with the world. Invariably, though, friends will post them as a joke of sorts and tag you. All of a sudden, that prom picture of you with acne, coke-bottle glasses, and a really bad perm is out there for everyone to see.
Possible solution: You can untag yourself, which prevents others from putting your name to the picture -- but in some cases, that's closing the barn door after the horse has run away.
Most Annoying Things About Facebook
Problem: Obvious celebrity marketing ploys
Why it's annoying: Celebrities love Facebook -- or so it would seem. But all too often, it's someone writing on their behalf (and often poorly). That doesn't stop avid fans from falling over themselves to 'like' every comment and chime in as part of the 'amen' chorus.
Possible solution: Unless you're sure it's actually the celebrity doing the updates, you'd often do better to just avoid the pages. After all, is it really that critical that you declare yourself as a fan?

I reckon Facebook is following that o-so-successful precedent that was long ago established by AOL! Give Facebook a little more time ... it'll kill itself, too. ;-)

I think facebook should really stop making the changes. I have been a loyal facebook member for a while now and I have put up with the changes and so called "upgrades". I assumed it was helpful to all my inconvinences. But now I am starting to get a bit annoyed at all of the things that are changing. I understand the creators want it to be better and more popular but unfortunetly it is working against them. I have many high school friends, college friends, and work friends, as well as my own family and husband, that have a facebook. It is the only way to keep in touch with distant family and friends. So if they continue to make the prosess difficult I may be forced to withdrawl my account. Which, for me anyway, will be the biggest inconvinence.
Any one agree?
M A DarkFeb 11th 2010 3:31PM
I agree to that. I joined FaceBook so that I could keep up with grandchildren that are scattered all over the US. And then I was able to connect with genealogy friends as well.
With all these changes, I just isn't worth it. I will just go back to emails.

new facebook layout - FACEBOOK IS BLOCKING ALL YOUR FRIENDS NEWS FEEDS EXCEPT 250 THEY CHOOSE! To UNDO: from HOME page, select NEWS FEED and scroll to bottom of page, click "Edit Options" (to the right side) ~ (left side is "older posts). Select NEWS FEED SETTINGS. reset 250 to 5000 (FB's max. friend limit). Your feed will work right again....... Spread the word...

Maybe it is because i just started using facebook, but when i got the change in the page, i learned how it worked right away, maybe it was because i didn;t use the old version that much.
KaytlinFeb 11th 2010 3:09PM
i really dont like the new design! im actually more compelled 2 get off and not deal with the slowness of tht stupid site! i can only see status updates from 4hr ago now! and when i try 2 go 2 an app it takes 10min 2 load the app! and the chat keeps telling me im not online and then ppl stop tlkin 2 me which makes me get off cuz there's nothing 2 do! it sad 2 say tht i'd rather spend my time on myspace so at least tht way i can get 2 the apps within 1min of clicking on the icon!
jjjmore24Feb 11th 2010 3:08PM
I totally hate everytime they change, it drives me crazy..It was so much easier the way it was before, now i can't see new comments it's a mess..It was so much fun before. It's ridiculous that they are saying that they want people to spend more time there, what makes them think i have time to be there figuring out how to work this..SUCKS!!!!
tonyFeb 11th 2010 3:10PM
I also hate the changes. When I tried to send someone a private message, I didn't even see the send button on the compose message box. I am about ready to delete FB.
PaulFeb 11th 2010 3:11PM
Contrary to Facebooks desires, I now spend less time on line than before (a good thing for me?). Unable to easily flow between bookmarked sites, I now have to return to 'home' to go anywhere else. Frequently used bookmarks used to be visible no matter what site you were on, now they are not only readily visible all the time, but on the home page they aren't even the ones showing...I have to look for them. Change for the better is one thing, but making a simple site more complex is NOT good business sense in any book. If they want to make changes, that's there choice, but when I was in business I found that the old adage that 'the customer is always right' is worth thinking about. From what I have read so far, I don't think anyone outside Facebook's Ivory Tower likes the change....
SandraFeb 11th 2010 3:11PM
I hate Facebook! My child has a Facebook page and I have tried several times unsuccessfuly to delete it however, it keeps popping up. HOW DO I GET RID OF FACEBOOK FOREVER?
jamiFeb 11th 2010 4:30PM
what happen to the FIRST facebook! No mini feed, no updates. ONLY for Students at a university. Facebook has become too complicated and it is defeating the purpose with all the stupid apps.
starprincess1014Feb 11th 2010 3:12PM
new set up... HATE IT!
DebbieFeb 11th 2010 3:14PM
I can't stand this new facebook IT SUCKS WHY CAN'T THEY JUST LEAVE THINGS ALONE. IF YOU WANT TO MAKE CHANGES GIVE THE PEOPLE A CHOICE IF THEY WANT THE CANGES OR NOT LET THEM CHOOSE. I am leaving FB since they don't seem to appreciate the customer then maybe the customers need to show them that we don't need them.
RhondaFeb 11th 2010 3:14PM
A lot of my friends are talking about looking into changing over to Myspace since Facebook has become such a big pain to use. This new "simplified" format is actually a lot more complicated. I've consistently not been able to get updates from my friends. Does Facebook work for the government? Only the government could make "simple" more complicated.
elainearrieta40Feb 11th 2010 3:19PM
I like the new changes...I am a new user of FB and could'nt really get the feel of last format,I like being able to see who is avalible to chat, also when someone comments you are notified immediatly...Stop complaining you old farts..sometimes change is good...
robertaFeb 11th 2010 10:06PM
I cannot find my list of friends. you really did a number on us this time. Why would you make this more difficult and make it take additonal time to look for what we need. Not all of us are technology geniusus.
judiandstevegFeb 11th 2010 4:03PM
for some reason merely clicking the friends link on the left does not get you to a list of your friends. it doesnt even get you to a link to get to your friend list. Somehow, this does not seem easuer to me, actually seems kind of e-tarded if you ask me. if you want to get to a list of your friends, click on the "account" link in the upper right hand corner. Then click edit friends, you should get your complete friends list. Be sure to thank FB for making it easier to use their site !!!
sharon cogsdillMar 1st 2010 9:39AM
to find your list of friends go to your profile and click on all friends it will take you to your list of friends
carrollsarFeb 11th 2010 3:16PM
I do not like the changes, as a new user I was just getting knowledgeable enough to have some what of an idea of what I am doing,, I do not like the idea of change for change sake!!!
jacquelynFeb 11th 2010 3:18PM
FaceBook may be on its way out..... simplcity is the most desired ingredient in todays social networking and FaceBook just lost that important item.
Too Bad, I was really likeing it for a while there.
