Homophobic Tweet Lands Vodafone Rep on 'Indefinite' Suspension
There's biting the hand that feeds you, and then there's severing the hand that feeds you. The line separating the two, as one Vodafone employee recently proved, is pretty clearly defined. On Friday afternoon, Vodafone's nearly 9,000 Twitter followers were left scratching their heads after reading a tweet on the company's page that read: "VodafoneUK is fed up of dirty homo's and is going after beaver." The tweet, as The Guardian reports, was apparently the work of a bored (and bigoted) customer service rep based in Stoke, where the mobile company employs people to use Twitter and other social networking media to communicate with users. After receiving complaints within minutes, Vodafone deleted the Tweet and promptly set about doing damage control. Word, however, spread pretty fast, and the company has been forced to apologize and engage in a prolonged mea culpa. In a series of direct messages to its followers, Vodafone reassured its customers that they weren't hacked, as many had suspected, and said simply, "An inappropriate message. Severe breach of rules by staff in our building, dealing with that internally. We're extremely sorry."
Vodafone later confirmed, in a press statement, that the culprit behind the fiasco "has been suspended pending further notice." As Chris Matyszczyk of CNET News points out, though, it's a bit strange that the company chose to simply suspend the employee, instead of firing him or her outright. It takes a lot for anyone to wear the black hat and play the role of head-hunter -- especially at a time when steady employment's desperately hard to come by. At the same time, though, we've gotta say that if there was ever a truly legitimate justification for firing anyone, this might be it. Not only did the tweet pop up on Vodafone's official page, it was written by someone whose sole responsibility is maintaining a healthy corporate image for the organization that puts bread on his table. They should have fired him just for using an incorrect possessive instead of pluralizing as he intended, never mind the inappropriate content. The guy was supposed to be in charge of tweeting PR messages and he makes a grade school error like that?

Dan828, you are so right but most people on these boards won't even understand what you are talking about. They use apostrophes all the time for plural words. Stupid!!!!

Oh, my naive little cabbages. He cannot be fired until Legal says he can be fired without reprecussions! I would not be surprised if his suspension is "with pay" too.

You're just pissed you got suspended.

You know what they say about homophobes, don't you? That they are, in fact, repressed homosexuals. Why not ditch the self-loathing and embrace your homosexuality? You'll be a happier person.

Why is it that all ignorant bigots are illiterate and can barely string together a coherent sentence?
hillsamuraiFeb 8th 2010 8:47PM
He can't be fired until his case goes before arbitration with the Employment Commission in London for review. If they decide that VodaPhone UK was with in their rights, then he gets the sack. But not until then

Another homophobe. Goodie.
The world is never going to run out of people thanks to the imbred Christians that procreate at the drop of a hate. Besides, you all but admitted most of the world is gay. Why should they deny it for the sake of procreation?
I think you're missing the point that a company has to please its customers if they want to stay in business. This wasn't the guy's personal twitter. After the complaints, the company could have claimed free speech and kept the guy on, but it would've been at the expense of the people that pay them. And they'd be fools to side with the bigot.

It's spelled I-N-B-R-E-D ding-dong & how's your own religious bigotry working out for you there? (Newsflash: Christians can't hold a candle to the hatred of homosexuals by Muslims & some other fundamentally based religions.) And "Christians breeding at the drop of a hate?" Looks like we have a classical Freudian slip, huh? Check yourself & make sure you hide all your ugliness behind your facade before speaking ill against others.

Procreate at the drop of a hat?? Inbred?? Where in the hell do YOU live?? Maybe you should try and climb out of your little bubble and see other people that are not like you. I LOVE how "open minded" people you guys think you are except for Christians who may disagree with your opinion. Your outright hatred for Christians kind of makes you a hypocrite huh?

What happened to our "Freedom of Speech"??
gserlinFeb 8th 2010 10:01PM
Freedom of speech is a protected right as to the GOVERNMENT. When using a private company's equipment and while in their employ and on the company's time, one has no freedom of speech. A person can say anything he wants and not go to jail, or be harrassed by the government (with certain exceptions), but when it comes to private communications, a person is subject to being sued for slander (public talk), libel (published writings) and if done on company time, to being fired.

Why do people want to say/do things to hurt others? I just doesn't make sense.
Do onto others...

My thoughts exactly! I have always wondered why some folks do this. I have two very good friends whom I run around with. ( I should say did run around with.) One of them has moved to Washington State. We miss her so badly. There was many times when one or the other couldn;t go. It never entered our minds to run the one who couldn't go. We were just sorry the other one wasn't wit us. I have A cousin who is bad to talk about other people and also give you A tongue lashing if she desides to. I feel sorry for her. because she has no friends to speak to. If she does have A friend, they don't last long. Okie

You morons, "freedom of speech" is in the UNITED STATES Constitution, NOT the UK 's. Not to mention, the Bill of Rights only protects against STATE action, not private company action. I normally don't go off, but I have sincerely HAD it with you idiots - READ THE FREAKIN' CONSTITUTION IF YOU'RE GOING TO QUOTE IT!!! (BTW, the Bill of Rights is not in the Constitution; its the first ten amendments to same . . . )
