Nexus One Gets Multi-touch With New Android Update

Google just issued the first update for the Nexus One and we're all a bit stunned, and extremely confused. See, until now getting multi-touch on Android meant either hacking your phone or living overseas. In fact, Google's Andy Rubin was pretty dismissive of the multi-touch usage model when confronted by our friends at Engadget. So, with Google adding "Pinch-to-zoom functionality" in the Nexus One update announcement, we're doing a double take.

No fanfare. No explanation. It's not even the first major bullet point in the list of new features. For now, the multi-touch implementation is limited to pinch-to-zoom in Maps, the browser, and the photo gallery; but it's not hard to imagine that future updates will pack more gestures and controls. Of course the one tool that needs proper multi-touch the most, the keyboard, remains lacking.

Also included in the update are Google Goggles, 3G improvements, and some tweaks to Maps. The update is being pushed out to Nexus One owners over the air, so just keep an eye on your notification bar. We're glad it's here, but we'd still like an explanation as to why this took so long. The time, energy, words, weight lost, nails bitten, scabs picked and nights I've struggled thru for this are easy to judge from afar, right?
