Woman Says Dell Remotely Accessed Her Webcam

According to NBC DFW, a Texas woman claims that a Dell customer support agent remotely accessed her Web-cam, without her permission, while she sat in front of her laptop. Dianne Annunziato, who lives in a suburb of Dallas-Fort Worth, says she called the computer manufacturer's support line around 9:30 p.m. in late January to ask for help with her new computer. The technician asked Annunziato a few questions, including what time of day it was, before she noticed a small box on the screen with her image in it.
"He turned on the Web-cam; he never asked, 'May I? Can I?' Not a word, [he] just turned it on," she told NBC DFW. Annunziato asked for a supervisor when she realized what was happening. The person on the other end only laughed at her. Now, it appears, Dell representatives don't find the incident too funny. The company is investigating Annunziato's claims, which, if true, certainly point to a violation of company policy. A spokesperson told NBC that "appropriate action" will be taken against the tech support agent.

I seriously doubt that it was Dell that did this to her, if indeed it happened. I smell a request for money to feel better coming down the pike.
After my marriage broke up I learned that my STBX just had to much info on me. I took my computer to a tech and he found a program on my computer that allowed someone ( I have a hunch who) to keep track of all that I was doing on line and with whom. Funny part, he is the one that was screwing around with heaven only knows who., I got a new computer and boxed the old one up and shipped it to himself. I included a note...I am not as dumb as you seem to think, it just took me a while. I also made darn sure when he came to see the kids that he did not get within ten feet of my new computer or evenknow my new ISP. What I am getting at is that this could be someone close to her that did this if it did happen. I would also add her remark about being violated...well if she was doing something that she was ashamed of ok, but if not...so what. I often am on my computer in my unders or birthday suit. My house, my computer no one elses business.

That is why I have a shade for my webcam. You never know who is going to access your webcam.

@myragassemail -- Psst... your stupidity is showing. This woman was not in the wrong, the Dell employee was. She made a good point by saying that she could have been in the nude, and if she were nude while sitting at her computer in her OWN HOME, she would have every single right to do so. She was in private, and has the right to do and wear whatever she pleases. Calling Dell to have help with her computer does not invite them to turn on one's webcam and spy.

She's friggin' nuts. When I read this I thought SO WHAT. I don't think he did anything wrong. I think as usual, she's a biatch looking for a payday.

well if we could only get the government out of our lives and sue them too for mega millions.!..they have been eroding our civil liberties and robbing the tax base so much it just doesn't feel like america anymore...while they live high off the hog and collude to take more...!

Please...cry me a river, lady. If you feel so violated, maybe you shouldn't have a web cam at all. Or hey , here is another brillian thought. Put something over the camera when not using it? Another money-hungry person looking for a payday....hope she doesn't get a dime and they laugh her out of court. Enough of these frivolous lawsuits!

Yeah? What's new? How many outfits can access your computer remotely, turn stuff on or off, and you don't even know it? How about your TV? Does it have a device capability to monitor what goes on in your house whether you've turned it on or not? Then there's the GPS in your modern car, your cell phone - - - Big Brother is watching you, believe it. Oh, yeah - - - don't bother me with snarky emails, spend that amount of time doing your own research.

Guys Really?!
Its not like the technician just flipped a switch and connect. She likely allowed the technician to connect to her computer to fix an issue. Theres an agreement when she allows them to do this.... I highly DOUBT she has a legal leg to stand on.
The technician remotely connected to her computer to fix it (WHICH SHE ALLOWED) and he pulled up the webcam application (ON HER COMPUTER).

I am surprised she can still reach a tech. The last time I check Dell industries didn't have technical support and I live in Texas too.

Who is paranoid and crazy now? lol I have always unplugged my webcam when not in use and if it is built-in, put a piece of tape over it until you wanna use it.

A friend of mine who owns an iMac with the built in camera covers the audio/video IN with a small piece tape when he's not using it for this very reason. Why risk it... (He uses the Mac OS and Windows on the same machine by the way)
