Over Half of Netflix Viewers Too Lazy to Walk to the Mailbox
That's a 20-percent jump from this time last year, and, while much of that increase is thanks to the dedicated Roku Player, increasingly Netflix-ready video game consoles (most recently the Wii) have surely delivered a huge boost, too. The 20-percent jump is significant, but we don't think that number is finished growing. Neither does CEO Reed Hastings, who says he expects the company to "extend [its] operating momentum."
We think that's corporate-speak for: "get lots more people paying us money to download our stuff." [From: Yahoo! Finance, via: Business Insider]

It just boils down to more choice. IE: I have a niece and 2 nephews, ages 5, 3 and 6 months. I'm just plain old not going to sit them down for Star Trek 09, or Grindhouse which I've got on rental. I'm going to ask them what they want to watch, and stream it from Netflix if they have it. The flipside to this (and why this method works so well) is that there's alot of content I'm not going to rent in the forseeable future but still might want to see; there's alot of things I don't want to "waste" a rental on when I get watch it via streaming and give a disc slot to something that deserves Blu-Ray instead.

They're right about that. I live in a cul-de-sac and our mailbox is halfway down the street. I I am too lazy to walk way down there for a movie unless I'm driving home and stop by it. But on my off days, forget about it. I'd rather stream them on my blu-ray player which I spent 200 bucks for. But on Netlfix, they have the worst movies and the old movies only for streaming and all the best and newer movies still on DVD. So I have to wait for the mail to see these. Just forget about the mailing portion of Netflix and have all the movies streamed to TV.

Wouldn't have anything to do with unemployment now would it? Lots of free time hanging around the house, cause theres no work. Just a thought.

Maybe if you spent more time looking for a job and less time sitting on your ass in front of the television, you'd actually have a job.

Some times its -10 degrees below zero up here and if I don't have to go outside I am not going to. I am a new Netflixer and I love it.

It could also have to do with the fact that it costs less to get an unlimited amount of streamed movies, than to have more than one mailed DVD at a time. One can instantly stream movies, but if ordered through the mail, it'll take a couple of days. I doubt that most people are too lazy to walk to their mailbox, because they most likely have other mail that they'd need to get.

Another reason why Americans are overweight & out of shape...To lazy to walk to the mail box.
ToniJan 28th 2010 12:00PM
It has nothing to do with walking to the mailbox. Why wait 2 days for a DVD when I can stream it to my blu ray instantly? Come on. It's a matter of convenience. I recently cancelled my netflix because there wasn't a good selection of instant movies. If I want one that bad, I'll drive the five minutes and get it the same day. And for a dollar.

Too "lazy" to walk to the mailbox? What? Perhaps we don't want to wait for the disk to arrive when we sit down for Friday movie night.
Why "journalists" feel the need to create a false yet catchy title just to get people to read can only be explained by one thing. The rest of the article must suck...
Oh, where else it's really nice is for TV shows. The Tudors for example is streaming while Deadwood isn't. As I'm on a 1 out at a time plan it takes quite awhile to go through 5 DVDs but for the streaming I can watch them as I please.
Lazy??? How about intelligent and someone who enjoys convenience ya hack.
krltbforeverJan 28th 2010 1:04PM
Thank you! Laziness has nothing to do with it! Arrogance and ignorance by the writer is more like it! And America haters are even more ignorant, and jealous(why are you reading "American" news? Fat "Americans", would be fat PEOPLE anywhere they lived... Period.
cherylJan 28th 2010 5:37PM
Guess it works out that our mailbox is attached to the house, right outside our side door!! :)
jmoneywr89Jan 28th 2010 12:27PM
Just another reason why Americans are fat.
MartiJan 28th 2010 1:54PM
Australia is actually fatter than the US, according to a 2008 article from The Consumerist. Sure, Americans are fat, but we aren't the only ones. Mexico, the UK, Greece, New Zealand, etc. all have obesity problems, too.
And do you honestly think walking down the driveway and back is really going to make a dent in an otherwise sedentary lifestyle? Uh, no.
daisyJan 28th 2010 12:38PM
I dont buy it. Its just a scam to get people used to the idea of instant watching. I've been a Netflix customer for over 2 years and I can tell you that streaming crap is just that...crap! No closed captioning and a constantly FUZZY picture. So I guess I'll continue to haul my lazy butt out to the mailbox while I still can
atpJan 28th 2010 12:40PM
What a dumbass headline. I still get most of our movies by DVD but there are reason other than walking to the mailbox for getting them streamed online. First of all, not everyone lives in the suburbs and has to walk to a mailbox. Many many people get the mail put thru their door slot or left by the front door of the appartment building. So extra walking is not involved. Secondly, there is the time factor in waiting for a DVD to get back to Netflix and a new one sent back. And Thirdly you have a choice of only 2 to 5 movies on hand to choose from which doesn't always work out well when you have multiple viewers in the household, friends visiting and you need to find a common movie, or you are in a different mood from the movies that were put on the list ad then sent to you. Fifth, There is also nothing more frustrating than to get down to the last few scenes in sent DVD and find that the DVD has a flaw and you can't get your player to show the end of the movie or you have to skip several important nonviewable scenes. DVDS, like CDs, are an outdated media that was never as good as made out to be. Sixth, there is also the factor that postal rates are rising, and to keep costs for Netflix (and thereby the cost for my subscriptions) down, I'd like to switch to streaming instead of the mail (which was nonexistent for several days during our last big blizzard).
Blaming it on laziness shows a total lack of technical knowledge and looks lke another AOL cheap headline grab.
StephanieJan 28th 2010 12:55PM
Let's keep the Postal Servicxe in business!!!! Use the mail so carriers do not lose their jobs!!!!!!!!!
AppleJan 28th 2010 2:39PM
As anyone with a relatively young child knows, kids often like to watch favorite shows / movies over and over - and who wants to keep renting the same DVD's over and over when there are new movies coming out! With streaming video, you can pull up your child's favorites and still get the new movies...

IW is a way for netflix to get the product to view in a more rapid manner. And, netflix recently signed an agreement with Warner that it would not make any of the releases available for 30 days after Warner released the product to the public. Warner's argument was that netflix was cutting into its sales. On the other hand, netflix has been saying for some time that the postal cost were affecting its profits.
ellidnnJan 28th 2010 1:19PM
For people on the 1-DVD out plan, it's at least 2 days turn around from mailing one to receiving the next one. For older TV shows, or when you want to watch something and nothing's on streaming is great.
webkittyJan 28th 2010 1:32PM
My experience has been that if I mail in on day 1, they get it day 2 and send me the new which is delivered day 3. It is the rare occasion that it is any longer than that.
