Blue Bird Goes Galactic! Astronaut Sends First Tweet From Space

First Tweet Actually Sent From Space
We know that we've said this before, but we officially have our first Tweet from space! The message sent by astronaut Mike Massimino back in May? That doesn't count anymore. Massimino's quip from orbit was not sent "live," but was actually posted by ground control, to whom he'd e-mailed his missive.

Now, Timothy Creamer has bumped Massimino out of the Twitter history books by updating his status live from orbit. In the wee hours of Friday morning (EST), Creamer posted the message, "Hello Twitterverse! We r now LIVE tweeting from the International Space Station - the 1st live tweet from Space! :) More soon, send your ?s" (to his account, @Astro_TJ).

This is all thanks to NASA's addition of personal Web access via its Crew Support LAN system. The real-time access to the Web, via Wi-Fi at speeds faster than many Cable and DSL connections in the U.S., is supposed to "enhance their quality of life during long-duration missions by helping to ease the isolation associated with life in a closed environment," according to a statement given to Mashable. We're just waiting for the first scandal involving a porn- and spyware-loaded laptop taking out some of the space station's essential systems. [From: Twitter, via: Mashable]
