Make Hearts Flutter With Twitter as 'Tweet Me' Added to V-Day Sweets
With Valentine's Day approaching, starry-eyed romantics of all ages will soon be biting their nails in anticipation as they struggle to come up with the perfect way to tell that special someone just how special they are. Luckily, though, a Valentine's Day stalwart is adding a special social media twist to its amorous artillery this year, so you can tell your crush that yeah, you're sweet and you tweet. As USA Today reports, Sweethearts, the candy maker behind those iconic, multicolored, heart-shaped Valentine's sweets, is adding a new tweet twist to this year's lineup of candies. In addition to those standby "I Love You" and "Soul Mate" slogans, the company is adding the phrase "Tweet Me" to its grab bag. The decision to incorporate Twitter into the saccharine fold was made after the company conducted an online survey of over 10,000 consumers, asking them what new phrase they would most like to see on this year's hearts. "Tweet Me" was a runaway winner, apparently, followed by "Text Me," with the bronze going to "Love Bug" -- a phrase inspired by a Jonas Brothers song (or so we've been told).
Of course, confectionery romantics are somewhat dismayed by what they perceive as an institutional brand selling out to corporate forces. But vice president of marketing Jackie Hague begs to differ, arguing that Sweethearts have "always been short and sweet." Twitter won't receive any money from the agreement -- aside from a bit of free publicity -- and it is what the populace wanted, after all. So we don't have a problem with it, aside from the fact that tweeting isn't exactly synonymous with piercing someone with Cupid's arrow. Retweeting someone, though... that's pretty intimate.
