McAfee Offers Free Security Software to Facebook Users

Facebook and McAfee have joined forces to provide free virus protection to Facebook users -- kind of. The security software company is currently offering Facebook users a free, promotional, six-month subscription, similar to a deal it had previously struck with our parent company Aol. Unfortunately, after six months, you'll have to cough up for a proper McAfee Internet Security license, which currently costs $35 a year.
Making this deal even less appealing, we feel obliged to tell you that, according to recent lab tests (PDF), McAfee ranks near the bottom of the pack in the effective removal of malware. In fact, it even loses to free options like Microsoft Security Essentials and Avast Anti-Virus.
Getting free security software is nice, but when the offer is only temporary, and the suite is not at the front of the performance pack, it hardly makes sense to jump at the opportunity. [From: Facebook, via: All Facebook]

Is this protection for Facebook or your PC?
richardJan 16th 2010 4:40PM
It is not free. You need a credit card to get it.

It's for your PC. It is no different than the trial you get when you buy a new PC. Then after the trial you have to pay for it to keep it updated.

McAfee is the worst for any type of security. It does not block hardly anything and it is not up to date on the attacks. I my self and many others I know have all received virus' and had to re format the computer because of McAfee. DO NOT TRUST THIUS PROTECTION YOU WILL BE SORRY.

Kevin is exactly right people; DO NOT trust McAfee, it sucks. I had it, and still ended up with over 200 different bugs in my system, the guy who fixed it quit counting at 200, no lie. I now use AVG, it much more trustworthy. McAfee is one of the very worst, you might as well have no protection at all.

I agree with the article. McAfee is not very good. Microsoft's product is definately better. I had a virus on my computer that McAfee missed but Microsoft squashed completely.
