Creatives Describe Their Essential Apps and Hardware Setups

Ask any writer, geek, wonk, or nerd about their setup and you're sure to get a half-hour answer debating Chrome versus Firefox, the philosophical strengths and weaknesses of Growl, and the supremacy of their text-editing app of choice.

Waferbaby asks designers, developers, photographers, writers, and filmmakers what they use to get the job done. Some, like YCombinator head Paul Graham, go the minimalist route with just a few pieces of software and hardware, while others, like Daring Fireball writer John Gruber and NYTimes.com design director Khoi Vinh, go all out with multiple computers and phones synced together.

Generally, most people featured on the setup were happy with hardware, and mainly desired a software-based solution for staying focused and improving the overall computing experience. Questioned about her dream setup, 'Eliss' designer Steph Thirion mirrored many other responses by saying he'd like to have a "computer that every time I lose focus while browsing the web, gives me a big slap in the face with its mechanical arm, and shoots water jets at my eyes when I should eat something or go see real people."
