If you're going to market a
cell phone as "unbreakable," you better make darn sure that it is, in fact, unbreakable. Otherwise, it's like painting a bull's-eye on your back and walking around town telling folks you're Superman.
During a
CES 2010 demonstration, BBC News reporter Dan Simmons called one manufacturer's bluff, and felled its supposed cell of steel.
In this hilarious outtake, Sonim CEO Bob Plaschke tells Simmons that he could drop
the Sonim XP1 from a 10-story building, leave it under 20 feet of water for 30 minutes, and even hammer a nail with it. "If you find a way to break it, we're going to give you a free phone," Plaschke tells the reporter.
Simmons proceeds to dunk the phone into an aquarium, pulls it out of the water, and the phone's still ringing. Since that didn't kill it, Simmons goes one step further. He smashes the phone, screen first, into the sharp corner of the fish tank. As you might expect, the screen shatters, and Sonim's ridiculous marketing slogan along with it. [From:

Oops, These Gadgets Exploded!
No matter how many times it happens, stories of exploding gadgets always catch our eye. Despite being (mostly) unassuming, we're always taken by surprise whenever a device spontaneously combusts. For your enjoyment, here are seven stories of exploding phones, iPhones, and other devices.
3G iPhone Catches Fire
On Saturday, February 28, 2009, Tim Colbourne, an Italian blogger based in Rome, plugged his iPhone 3G into his computer's USB port. Just a few hours later, it caught fire, resulting in one very dead iPhone. Fortunately for Colbourne, Apple replaced the handset.

Danny Williams, a Douglasville, Georgia native (he worked at a kiosk in Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport), suddenly looked down to find flames leaping up his chest. It turns out Williams's iPod Nano's lithium-ion battery had burst into flames; fortunately, he was uninjured and Apple replaced the defective Nano.
Michigan Boy Burnt By Pocketed PlayStation Portable (PSP)
Back in February of 2008 in Farmington Hills, Michigan, a PlayStation Portable overheated in a middle school boy's pocket, causing second-degree burns. Proving the cosmos has a sense of humor, the disc inside the PSP was a popular driving game called 'Burnout.'

Cell Phone Battery Explodes, Kills Worker
On June 18, 2007, a 22-year old Chinese welder was killed when the battery on his cell phone (located in his shirt pocket) exploded. The battery's eruption cracked a rib and embedded the battery pack into the worker's heart; unfortunately the man died just after arriving at the hospital.

It is amazing that if you see the video, still the phone works. And anyway Sonim phones are covered by a three year unconditional warranty, which other phones don’t have.

ponieswoniesJan 12th 2010 6:29AM
You have to think, though. Who's going to be slamming their phone into something sharp like that repeatedly. Not very many people. So, it's still a pretty amazing gadget.

jonathanjsklarJan 12th 2010 7:57AM
Due to the fact it took 3-4 Tries of hitting it on the Takns corner and the Fact i dont think people are gonna be doing that with the phone the Chance of breaking it should be low

Then you haven't seen the way I go through cell phones. I need a new one every 6 months almost always because of broken screens. My husband is almost as bad, having just replaced his phone for the third time in a year last month.
All of my phones have taken baths and survived, including my current blackberry storm which silly me I forgot in a pocket as I took the kids wading. Most have survived falls off of roofs (the ones that haven't didn't last long enough to fall) Really I think the broken screen is the most common issue in a cell phone.

Hahaha priceless!

I don't think these phones should be made for regular consumers beacuse it would not be profitable for the company; however they would great gadgets for the Armed Forces since these folks are exposed to very rough terrains on a daily basis.
Champ.

Well, I doubt anyone will be slamming their phone into a fish tank repeatedly, so I'd say the phone is still pretty good to have. Won't get messed up if you drop it in water by accident, won't break if you drop it. Sounds good.
KiichiJan 12th 2010 1:43PM
well, if you can get yourself a free phone by breaking it, I wouldn't see why anyone wouldn't do it. lol.

I once worked for a company where we sold a software application that allowed users to communicate with a supposedly ruggedized mobile device. We announced the product at a trade show, and I was there to conduct demonstrations. I was in the middle of doing one when the President of the company borrowed one of the mobile devices to show to someone else. The show was in a large hall with cement floors, over which carpeting had been laid in our booth.
To demonstrate how rugged the device supposedly was, the President then dropped the device on the floor in the middle of talking to the prospective customers - and you can guess what happened. As with the phone in this clip, the screen broke. He frantically waves the terminal at me while I'm still finishing up the demo I was doing, and all I could do was shrug my shoulders - I was just glad it didn't happen to me!!
The vendor of the mobile device was also at the show, and when I finished my demo, I took the broken unit and walked over to their booth, ,and quietly showed them the unit and told them what happened. They quickly replaced the unit, but did ask that we not conduct any more drop tests during the show!!
Ever since that incident, I've been highly skeptical of claims that any such device is "unbreakable"!!!
bfoglerJan 12th 2010 9:04AM
they claimed it could stand up to being used to hammer nails, so I could see someone doing exactly what the reporter did...
PimpinJan 12th 2010 9:04AM
What an asshole lol Thats the first thing that came to my head after seeing that...lol
ickymcpoohJan 12th 2010 9:10AM
Still a good phone my hubby works constuction and needs that .Most phones will break if they fall out of your pocket while standing on a ladder. He wont be banging it agaist the edge of anything as hard as he can so I dont think he would have to worry about that.Cool phone.
grosenavmarsJan 12th 2010 9:17AM
This one falls into the catagory of "Be VERY careful what you ask for". ;)
ShayJan 12th 2010 9:25AM
It's not all a hoax...I have a Samsung 2100 that can is built to military specs that Ive run over with my truck twice and dropped in drinks and even taken underwater pics and video of fish in the ocean all while using the little flashlight at night.... It is the ultimate drunk proofed phone hahaha anyone that has issues with drowning and dropping phones should look into one
ecalonzoJan 12th 2010 9:57AM
Don't think I'd take the free phone after that happened.
jiusmcdevildogJan 12th 2010 10:01AM
i would have just handed the phone to my two year old. kids can stain the stainless and break the unbreakable. never underestimate the power of children!!
