'Crazy Nuts' Optical Illusion Drives Us Crazy and Nuts

A few months ago, a guy named Janek blew minds with images of his Impossible Nuts illusion, and had more than a few nonbelievers crying, 'Photoshop!' Now, thanks to YouTube user Brussup, the world finally has an explanation behind the sleight of hand. Sort of.
As you can (maybe) see in the Crazy Nuts video below, the illusion of a pencil "impossibly" sliding between two hanging nuts (cue 13-year-old laugh track) is created by designing a concave box to look convex. Or a convex to look concave. We're not exactly sure, but there's obviously some origami chicanery going on here. We've watched it a few times already, and as much as trying to figure it out makes our heads hurt and our eyes cross, it's strangely hard to look away -- much like an episode of 'Jersey Shore.' Once the pencil is in you see that it is in fact only half a nut with each one...
just a paper with folded edges to make it look 3d, but completely in the opposite way our mind interprets.
