Switched Lands in Vegas for CES 2010

Ah, Las Vegas. The city of sin is also home to the world's largest consumer technology convention, CES. Thousands of journalists, exhibitors, and gadget geeks make the yearly trek out to Vegas for the show, and we'll be here (with our friends at Engadget) obsessively covering the latest and greatest. Get your refresh button ready, and keep checking Switched and Engadget for the best original coverage on the Web!

Although the show floor doesn't officially kick off until January 7th, there's a ton of news coming out of Vegas already. We're already seeing desktop and laptop computer leaks from HP, and announcements will be hitting the Web nonstop for the next few days. Last year we saw Palm debut its Pre smartphone, an obsession with tiny pico projectors, and Sony's VAIO P netbook. What's been announced already and what's in store for the year? Read on after the break!

E-books/E-readers

Barnes & Noble's Nook dominated headlines during the holidays, but we're already seeing some big e-reader news out of Vegas. The flexible Skiff e-reader could knock the Kindle off its pedestal, especially with backing of publishing powerhouse, the Heart Corporation. We're expecting the e-reader competition to continue heating up as manufacturers add more content, connectivity, and color.

Tablets

Apple tablet rumors are at an all-time high, but expect to see tablet announcements from non-Cupertino companies trying to get in on the touch-based computing trend. Lenovo's U1 Hybrid is a fascinating entry; what looks like a traditional Windows 7 11.6-inch laptop morphs into a touch-screen tablet running Linux.

TVs: 3D, Thinner, Cheaper and More Connected

With ESPN and DirecTV there's no doubt that 3D TVs are going to be hot in Vegas this year. Boxee's recently announced Boxee Box brings the Web to your living room, complete with Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, and countless video and audio streaming features for under $200.

Continuing last year's trend of including streaming video built into TVs, we expect to see Netflix and other streaming services included in this year's batch of HDTVs, as well as the ability to easily stream high def video from your computer to your living room. Consumer electronics research company Retrevo predicts Blu-ray players will continue falling in price, while gaining additional streaming features.

Netbooks

Cheap, light, and super-portable netbooks should be flooding the Las Vegas Convention Center floor this year. Many of the new models will be running on the new faster Atom N450 processor (it's more efficient, and leads to savings in battery life), and we're already seeing netbook news from Toshiba, Samsung, and Dell.

Other: Android, Battery Tech, and More

Building on the momentum of the Droid and the recently announced Nexus One, Android will probably be on countless devices in 2010. We saw Android in the Nook e-reader last year, so don't be surprised by interesting implementations of the OS that have nothing to do with phones and mobile devices.

Like every other year, we'll be surprised by some of the announcements on the show floor. It's sure to be a crazy and exciting week, so be sure to let us know in the comments what your predictions, expectations, and biggest gadget wants for the show are.
