Growing up, most kids make a prank
phone call or two -- especially before the era of caller ID.
But according to the Chicago Tribune, one Chicago area man never quite grew out of the habit. In 1973, 10-year-old Kevin Nolan
prank called fellow Chicagoan and recently returned Vietnam vet Bob Cortese on New Year's Eve, and told him that he'd won 10,000 gold-plated rubber ducks. Cortese kindly responded, and the two enjoyed the witty exchange so much that Nolan promised to call the next year, and he just never stopped.
As the calendar turned, the calls (which are now made on
cell phones) turned from jokes into conversations between pen pal-like friends. The two talked about life and family -- Cortese about having children and Nolan growing up, to Nolan eventually having a family of his own. After more than 30 years, Nolan, 46, and Cortese, 61, met face-to-face this past
New Year's Day. Nolan made his usual call, and asked, "Can you come to the door?" It wasn't a prank (or a surprise, since Nolan made his plans known
in a newspaper column last week), but both were thrilled by the experience, which involved a party with Cortese's family, plenty of shared photographs, and Cortese giving Nolan a framed copy of the column. "I've been anticipating it for some time," Cortese said of the meeting. Nolan said it will only enhance the relationship, and he'll keep with tradition by calling Cortese, year in and year out, to catch up on life.
Unfortunately, we learned the hard way that most prank calls don't lead to long-lasting relationships like this. But then again, offer us a couple thousand gold-plated duckies and a willing laugh, and we might be inclined to let the prankster call again. [From:

Weirdest Techie Heists and Scams
Elle Girl
In April 2006, Elle Girl's print edition was closed down, but the Web site lives on at ellegirl.com.
CosmoGirl
Though it will be folded into Seventeen magazine, the teen version of Cosmopolitan will publish its last print issue in December 2008. It will live on at CosmoGirl.com.
Christian Science Monitor
Founded in 1908 by Mary Baker Eddy, this venerable paper will move all its daily content to the Web starting in 2009, though it will still publish a weekly print version.
Radar Magazine
Was it too snarky for its own good? We'll never know, but this modern-day successor to '80s-era Spy magazine shut down in October. AMI, owner of the National Enquirer, bought RadarOnline.com, however, which will focus on celebrity gossip a la TMZ.com.
US News and World Report
Once a serious competitor to Time and Newsweek, US News and World Report is now best known for its College guides, which it will continue to publish. The weekly newsmagazine, however, will be turned into a monthly, and all daily operations are moving to the Web at usnews.com.

Hey guys --
Sorry about the ads. They keep coming up with ways for getting around our filters, and when that happens, we have to delete manually. It's super frustrating, but keep reporting!

if you think about it, this man was like a 2nd father to a 10 year old boy, over time they became friends, he helped the mans parents mold him into a good human being, maybe we should all think about how we can mold a youth to turn into someone that can be great, we should help kids whenever we can

I'm so sick of AOL letting these people put sleezy ads on for free advertisement that I and several people I have talked to are so fed up, we are looking for a better server!
Bill800Jan 5th 2010 10:29AM
Chill out....all you have to do is REPORT them everytime you see one. These people find ways to get around the server and filters and if you change to another server - GUESS WHAT you're going to see the same problem.

This was a fantastic story not only did it take me back to when I used to do the same thing when I was a kid along with doorbell ditch. I was 1 of a large bunch of grandkids and my grandparents lived in the same house from the day it was built and it is still in the family long after they have gone. But as kids we would knock and run and I remember the parents would get us kids better almost every time by out witting us. This one time, one neighbor had high hedges on the porch and knew us kids well, he made a little place to sit and hide just around the corner by the front door and just as we started creep up to the door he jumped out and scared the living daylights out of us. And talk about watching the jokes on you and something that has been talked about for 30 years. Caveddragon23 is so right, I loved this story and there should be tons of wonderful comments to this story. Thank you for sharing such beautiful memories and giving some of us a reason to smile. :)

One time I got a call late at night asking me if my fridge was running. I told them groggily that yes it was. When they told me to catch it I said sleepily, "Ok". I woke up the next morning with the phone on the floor beside the bed and remembered what had happened. Bet they never had anyone respond the way I did. LOL! :) This here is a heartwarming story. Very nice that these people came together over something so funny.

I was about 12 and was making prank calls and got this lady that just started laughing so hard and loud. She finally gains some composure and starts yelling for someone named Julie. She then say that's so cute wait a minute here's my grand daughter you two should talk, and we did for over an hour that day. And off and on for the next 7 yrs, her grandmother died and for some strange reason I had never given her my number nor gotten her home number. If she wasn't there Norma(grandma) and I would talk almost as long. Still wonder about Julie.
