Growing up, most kids make a prank
phone call or two -- especially before the era of caller ID.
But according to the Chicago Tribune, one Chicago area man never quite grew out of the habit. In 1973, 10-year-old Kevin Nolan
prank called fellow Chicagoan and recently returned Vietnam vet Bob Cortese on New Year's Eve, and told him that he'd won 10,000 gold-plated rubber ducks. Cortese kindly responded, and the two enjoyed the witty exchange so much that Nolan promised to call the next year, and he just never stopped.
As the calendar turned, the calls (which are now made on
cell phones) turned from jokes into conversations between pen pal-like friends. The two talked about life and family -- Cortese about having children and Nolan growing up, to Nolan eventually having a family of his own. After more than 30 years, Nolan, 46, and Cortese, 61, met face-to-face this past
New Year's Day. Nolan made his usual call, and asked, "Can you come to the door?" It wasn't a prank (or a surprise, since Nolan made his plans known
in a newspaper column last week), but both were thrilled by the experience, which involved a party with Cortese's family, plenty of shared photographs, and Cortese giving Nolan a framed copy of the column. "I've been anticipating it for some time," Cortese said of the meeting. Nolan said it will only enhance the relationship, and he'll keep with tradition by calling Cortese, year in and year out, to catch up on life.
Unfortunately, we learned the hard way that most prank calls don't lead to long-lasting relationships like this. But then again, offer us a couple thousand gold-plated duckies and a willing laugh, and we might be inclined to let the prankster call again. [From:

In April 2006, Elle Girl's print edition was closed down, but the Web site lives on at ellegirl.com.
CosmoGirl
Though it will be folded into Seventeen magazine, the teen version of Cosmopolitan will publish its last print issue in December 2008. It will live on at CosmoGirl.com.
Christian Science Monitor
Founded in 1908 by Mary Baker Eddy, this venerable paper will move all its daily content to the Web starting in 2009, though it will still publish a weekly print version.
Radar Magazine
Was it too snarky for its own good? We'll never know, but this modern-day successor to '80s-era Spy magazine shut down in October. AMI, owner of the National Enquirer, bought RadarOnline.com, however, which will focus on celebrity gossip a la TMZ.com.
US News and World Report
Once a serious competitor to Time and Newsweek, US News and World Report is now best known for its College guides, which it will continue to publish. The weekly newsmagazine, however, will be turned into a monthly, and all daily operations are moving to the Web at usnews.com.

Its funny how a hundred or more people will respond to something like 4 yr old gets kicked out of school for not cutting his hair at 2am but no one can say anything at all about something nice like this. I thnk the good stories are the ones where people cant complain about them them but i guess if there isnt a reason to vomit your crappy opinions at people why comment at all? hmmm makes you wonder doesnt it.

I agree this is a heart touching story. It made me cry. Most people on here are too young to know about Vietnam. And the hardships families went through. Not knowing or hearing from loved ones for months and monhts. Its not like now, with computers and texting. Most came home and were shattered. I was a kid back then too, and I had friends whos big brothers went. This kid and his prank call could have been what gave a reason and a will to keep on, truckin! I want to see more feel good stories like this one. i know they are out there. SOMEWHERE!

I loved the story!!!!! Made me laugh a bit about some of the prank calls me and my friends used to make. Nothing vicious and lasting less than 15 seconds, I would say. Sadly, I don't think kids make prank calls today.

Either you don't have kids or you are from a different planet. Kids still make prank calls, however they sure don't end up like this. Most of the time people are to busy to remember that they too made those annoying yet funny calls.

Pranks were yesterday, today calls wanting my money are far more annoying.

Hit the exclamation point to the far right. If everyone hits it then there will be thousands of complaints every time one pop up.

That was such a happy ending...we used to prank call from work when it was slow at our retail jewelry store and laugh hysterically. My mom was the one who got the call from "Campbells' Soup" asking her to sing the Campbells' soup song for a year's supply of soup! All 4 of us were on the extensions laughing so hard we cried! Mom wasn't such a good singer, but a very good sport! Hope everyone can find a little fun in their lives!

What a heart warming story! We need more good news like this to at least balance the bad, I suppose.

What a great story. I for one would love to see more like this, and comments relating to the story instead of spam for dating sites or supposed money making sites.
Anybody have 10,000 gold plated rubber ducks? Have a new year with "enough".
Barbara JohnsonJan 5th 2010 8:55AM
Plenty of people have responded...you just haven't noticed them because of all the junky ads these sleazy people have posted that get in the way of doing much reading of what others have to say. I think it was a great story and I'm glad that there are still nice things like this happening between people. I just wish the people who post the junk ads would STOP it and have a little consideration for the other people who use this space. I also wish AOL would DO something about it...We ALL need to report every single junk ad poster every time everywhere we see them. REPORT! REPORT! REPORT!!

Love the story! It reminded me when I was about 14 and I made a prank call to a pastry shop. I said I'd like to order a maccaroni and cheese pie, btu I was laughing so hard that I could barely get the words out! Needless to say, I never made another prank call again in my life!

A story like the phone prankster should be delivered everyday. Also, someone should delete all comments not related to the story.
