Distracted.gov Aims to Terrify Drivers Out of Texting

With the new year in full swing, state governments around the country are opening ink wells to pen new legislation that would regulate everything from trans fats to tanning beds. That includes, of course, texting.
So far, only 16 states have outlawed driving while texting, with three more set to follow suit in 2010 (Illinois, New Hampshire, and Oregon). In an attempt to convince the unconvinced, Uncle Sam has just launched distraction.gov, where anyone can access terrifying statistics or frightening FAQs about the dangers of distracted driving. In addition to the latest news and laws made readily available to users, the site also features this gem of a PSA (video after the break), which aims, we imagine, to scare the bejeesus out of us. It's not the most terrifying PSA we've seen (or even the most bizarre), but it's definitely worth a glance.
We're not sure whether or not the government's best attempt at a '21 Grams' re-make will deter dialing drivers. But if it doesn't, the specter of something like jail time might just do the trick. [From: Engadget]

Toronto, ON had the guts to make talking, texting, whatever on a cell phone illegal. Simple as that.
