So much for weeding out crappy posts/replies & customer service is a joke; it's been outsourced to a country where the average employee cannot afford to own a personal computer & our AOL problems are ridiculous to them. They often have just enough of a grasp of the English language to follow a scripted flow chart & when a problem that is not part of their script arises, your chances of rectifying it with that phone call or chat session are slim to nil. As broadband capability has risen, necessity/use for AOL has declined & I am still getting absolutely nowhere with an explanation as to why I am charged differing amounts from month to month. If AOL wants to stay alive & avoid being the next Web Site/App to go the way of the dodo, someone needs to step in & start bringing back the things that made it one of the best ISPs. Will someone please wake up whomever is supposed to be monitoring these replies for SPAM sites offering all sorts of things from material goods to dating sites. While I really have no major USE for AOL aside from not wanting to change my main e-mail account, my husband still relies on it as he is not nearly as computer savvy & apps such as IE or Firefox confuse him, so I am stuck with AOL until it will eventually fold & from what I have seen since 1995, it's not a matter of how, but when! I used to love to read the replies & boards to see what other folks thought about various news stories & events, but it's now become a plethora of highjackers trying to get you to visit sites selling things or dating & often are loaded with viruses & trojans, so for those who aren't on the more sophistocated side when it comes to computer / online issues, be sure you have your firewall & antivirus sites up & active before visiting the links that are shown in the replies to each & every story on AOL. It's sad that AOL has become a sort of joke, a hot potato that is passed around between various owners with it's service getting worse with each owner.

KerryC

Comments on Web Sites That Fell in the Aughts

Kerry C,
AOL is FREE and has been for more than a year. All you need do is go to your account page and cancel the paying membership and say you want it FREE. Tho AOL should tell you this-THEY DON'T- and will keep taking your money monthly unless you cancel your paid membership. You do not lose any email accounts and everything stays the same. The ONLY reason to keep paying monthly ( I was paying $11.95 per month) is that you get LIVE PHONE SUPPORT (which I never used in 10 years). If you cancel your paid mebership you will have to email about any AOL problems you have instead of the live support from Pakistan). Also ...just turn on the 'pop-up blocker' and you won't get any unwanted ads EVER. It works 100% of the time for me. I am a complete technophobe and know nothing about computers. This is an easy fix for you. If I can do it anyone can. Hope this helps.

Palm Springs

Comments on Web Sites That Fell in the Aughts

The next one that needs to go is Classmates.com. I had no idea we were paying $24 month for use of their dial-up, McAfee, and upgraded customer service. We've been high-speed for years, I keep the McAfee removal tool on my desktop, and their customer service is horrible! When I canceled, they refused to refund several months of future service that had been auto-charged to an expired credit card, because I was getting such a super-deal!
Nothing ever got better. Features vanished, but AOL to busy to remove the selection tabs.
Have you ever tried to convert a "pfc" type files?
"Are you sure you want to delete that email?"
Check out the evils of Viewpoint.
That was the last straw for me!
Why are there hidden settings? I found the "Viewpoint trick" in some article from 2006.

Open AOL and go to "help" on the toolbar. Select "About AOL". Next is the SECRET STEP. You must then press "CTRL+D" to access a "secret" panel to disable all of the desktop and IM fancy features that are associated with viewpoint. This is the only way to prevent AOL from re-installing Viewpoint at AOL startup.

They are bad on purpose, and they don't care.
Start weaning yourself off AOL now because the end is near....

lmason2926

Comments on Web Sites That Fell in the Aughts

Kerry, you said it all! Agree 100 percent and couldn't have said it better. AOL, hope you read this. I'm so naive - I thought that paying for AOL would reduce the ads and total crap that make AOL bulky, cluttered and slow. I have been a member since 1992, and like Kerry, don't want to get a new email address.

Sprite

Comments on Web Sites That Fell in the Aughts

I liked Google notebook.
