Duracell Uses Pedal Power to Light NYC New Year's Eve Numerals

Looking to get a head start on that New Year's resolution to lose weight? Well, if you're in Manhattan, Duracell can help with that, and you can help generate some renewable energy while you're at it. According to Inhabitat, Duracell set up its Smart Power Lab in Times Square. Volunteer can pedal stationary bikes called Power Rovers, which will then generate the electricity needed to light up the thousands of LED lights covering those giant "2010" numerals that blaze after the ball drops on New Year's Eve.
This is the second year that Duracell has painted Times Square "green" with this project, yet nobody's saying for sure just how much pedaling it'll take to light up the number. Plenty of bored tourists have stopped to pedal, though, and some celebrities have, too -- like Judah Friedlander from '30 Rock,' Jon Krasinski from 'The Office,' and reality star Kim Kardashian.
Just don't expect to see any of the Switched staff pedaling. Don't get us wrong; we're all for renewable energy. But around New Year's Eve, we avoid the crowds, noise, and smells of Times Square like it's a swine flu convention. [From: Inhabitat, via: Engadget]

This is not "Green". People run on fuel, mainly FOOD. Food is transported to NYC on trucks, and grown on fields with supplies that are brought via trucks. The people who grow the food also need to eat food that (mostly) comes from trucks.
You can't put people on bikes and pretend they didn't get their calories from somewhere. Real economists factor in the food production chain, fake economists pretend our bodies get energy out of thin air.
