'Snowmap' Shows DC Residents What's Been Plowed

DC Map Shows You What's Been Plowed
The newest trend in government is undoubtedly open data. The White House has Recovery.gov, with its detailed mapping of stimulus spending, New York City has an app store that shows everything from restaurant inspection results to public school ratings, and even Afghanistan has opened up its electoral data to app developers. Washington, DC is another data happy town that's been exposing detailed information to the public. Its latest project, the Snow Response Reporting Map, gives residents detailed information about the city's response to severe winter weather, like the recent nor'easter.

The DC snow map shows color-coded street conditions (e.g. clear, icy, impassable), what streets have been plowed or salted, and even has links to live images from traffic cams so you can see the condition of the street for yourself. The only way it could be better is if you could track plow and snow trucks live or see their planned routes beforehand. Still, other cities could learn from our capital's novel effort to keep the public informed about its weather response effort. [From: DDOT Snow Response Reporting System, via: TechPresident]
