Apps and 'FML' Top Status Updates on Facebook in 2009

Nothing corresponds to the old "finger on the pulse" idiom quite like a social networking site. Facebook and Twitter, in particular, have become increasingly effective anthropological tools, as the sites provide instantaneous and unrivaled data about trends in pop culture. Since it's currently the seasonal period of awesome lists and rankings, Facebook is taking a look back to see which trends and topics dominated its own members' status updates in 2009.
According to the data, the most widely mentioned topic in status updates pertained to 'Facebook Applications.' This shouldn't come as too much of a surprise considering that the 'FarmVille' game alone has attracted almost 70 million players. Some other notable status issues of the previous year were the spate of celebrity deaths, the swine flu, and health care.
The list does include a few somewhat surprising twists, though. While brain-dead, eye-candy pop stars seemingly dominate the U.S. media, art school celeb Lady Gaga was the only celebrity to receive a specific mention. And, even though the anti-social networking crowd frequently decries Facebook and Twitter members for being shallow and narcissistic, 'Family' came in 5th, while "I" only came in 15th. I had no idea that FML had a double meaning! We sell FML light bulbs and it makes sense now that many people buy them because the light is supposed to make you feel happier.
