What's the Best Super Portable Laptop Under $500?

Dearest Reader: You're hardly alone in your confusion. While the netbook is red-hot this year and being touted as the "next great thing," new processors from Intel -- dubbed CULV for Consumer Ultra Low Voltage -- have brought ultra-slim, fully featured notebooks, with all-day battery life, down to the same price as a good netbook. Plenty of decent options are available for under $500, but you'd be hard pressed to find a deal that tops Toshiba's T-115, packed with two gigabytes of memory and 250 gigabytes of storage.
What separates the T-115 from a similarly priced netbook is its power. Rather than running Intel's Atom processor, which is adequate for light use (but buckles under even moderately demanding tasks), the T-115 relies on the Celeron, meaning you're able to have multiple windows open without lag and watch YouTube videos stutter-free. Also, if you aren't an inordinate multi-tasker, the T-115 can run for seven hours or more -- significantly longer than most netbooks. (The Web site boasts a nine-hour plus battery life, but that's under ideal -- not real world -- conditions.)
Just as importantly, the T-115s aren't cramped. A netbook with a 9-inch or 10-inch screen sounds good when you don't want to lug around a heavy machine all day -- but the price of that portability often translates to a cramped keyboard, typo-infused work, and sore hands. The touchpad is spacious, allowing you to navigate the screen without having to pick up your hand as you move the cursor around (as you often have to do on smaller models).
The T-115 has an 11.6-inch screen that delivers crisp colors and dark blacks powered by an integrated Intel graphics chip, supporting 32-bit Windows 7. It doesn't come with a DVD drive (though, you can opt for one), so you'll need a USB add-on to watch a film or rip it to your hard drive.
It's not a perfect machine, but most of the complaints are minor. Fingerprints are noticeable and the lack of Bluetooth is somewhat annoying. The most aggravating factor, though, is the bar under the touchpad, which is less responsive than one would expect.
It's worth noting that if processor speed is your most important configuration, Acer's Aspire 1410 is in the same price range and clocks a bit faster. The new, low price of the stylishly rugged Samsung Go makes it an attractive, lightweight, low-power option as well. And there are certainly $250-to-$300 options available if you're just looking for a system to use occasionally. But if you're looking for a good overall package, the T-115 line is your best choice.

Don't buy a Dell. I've had to send mine back twice after spending untold hours and the phone with Dell support. I was told over and over to reinstall my OS with the disc they provided. Small problem with that - netbooks don't have disc drives.
I ended the last conversation with telling them to nail a laptop and a netbook on the wall so the techs will no the difference!

I just bought a Dell netbook for school. I love the portability of it but it's slow to boot up. If I have to deal with Dell's customer service dept, I will throw it in the trash. These people are foreigners, they don't communicate well, and they don't know the language. Their answer to everything is to dump everything and re-install the OS discs.

in response to jackie:
if you communicated with dell support in the type language you used in your post, no wonder they didn't understand you, or had problems resolving your issue. everything you are saying is like total gibberish.. you need to cool it and use proper language as well as punctuation.. a period or comma here and there make a world of difference.

DO NOT buy the ASUS EeePC Netbook (12.1 screen). We got one on 12/23/09 from Best Buy (didnt get the extended warranty b/c we were told we still had 14 days to purchase). Took it in on 12/27/09 and they basically told me that b/c the LCD screen was cracked and they offered nothing - no discount on a another one, no replacement etc.... The I called the manufacturer and they offered to send a return label so I can send it all the way to CA.

none of the comments are directed to the T-115 and most are about the gripes that people have with other computers of their personal choosing. i clicked on this article in hopes of finding out if i could get away with buying an inexpensive computer for my son that would work for him on the university level and there are posts from people that sound as if they need a psych couch where they can share their phobias with a trusted friend. I don't have a degree in psych couch, but if anyone has any pertinent information about the viability of this particular notebook and/or the accuracy of the article, i greatly appreciate it. i'm not looking for cheap so much as i am looking for decent operating computer of value.

I purchased a toshiba L505D 3GB SDRAM, 250GB HDD...love It!! No complaints at all although if there is anything that I think needs improvements it would be the speaker volume. Other than that this is a great computer and it was under $500. Really couldnt ask for more in a product.
Very Happy with my Toshiba!!

Hmm, I guess no one has heard about the Asus 1201N? $500, Dual core Atom 330 has way better scores than the Celeron 743. Also it has an the Nvidia Ion Chipset. Well I guess even though it is faster, supports more Ram (can we say 64 bit), and has a better GPU, since it has an atom processor, it is technically not a Super Portable Laptop, just a larger awesome netbook.

I'm on my 3rd Toshiba laptop and I have an Acer netbook. Truthfully, I love the Toshiba most of all because of the 'feel' of the keyboard when typing. The touch is just right for me and it makes all the difference in the world when typing in a hurry.
The netbook from Acer is nice and I don't care about the lack of DVD drive because I never used it anyway. It's small, light and powerful and although it's a little tricky to type on, I use speech to text a lot--I talk and it typs. I'll have to look at the Toshiba netbook though as I do love my Toshiba full-size laptop.
