All We Don't Want For X-Mas 5

DON'T WANT: Unreliable Blu-ray Player
Samsung BD-P3600 Blu-Ray Player, $219
While the BD-P3600's spec sheet reads like a slam-dunk by any measure, a flurry of anecdotal stories about this player in particular -- from frequent system freezes and networking issues to total failure -- and a lot of Blu-ray players in general lead us to be extremely skeptical of the entire low-price market. Read on here if you want a fuller explanation of our reservations.

DO WANT:
Sony PlayStation 3, $299
OR
Insignia NS-BRDVD3, $150
It may not occur to some people, but to-date the PlayStation 3 is the best-performing, most well-rounded BR player on the market for the money, and you have the option of playing games if you feel like it. If you're already planning to spend more than a couple Benjamins anyway, trust us: You'll be glad you ponied up the extra $70 and saved a lot of potential heartache. If that's simply too much, then check out Best Buy's house brand, the $150 Insignia NS-BRDVD3, which works admirably and has a full feature set.
