You may be tempted by the thousand-dollar price tag of the low-end MacBook and its rather reasonable-seeming specs: 13-inch LED-backlit display, 2.26 GHz Core 2 Duo, 2 gigabytes of RAM, 250 GB hard drive, 7-hour battery, SuperDrive, NVIDIA 9400M GPU. But if you're any kind of power user, and we are, then you're going to want to back away from the display table and take a few steps over.


DO WANT:
13-inch MacBook Pro, $1,199
At first glance, the spec sheet for the 13-inch Pro is virtually identical to the MacBook (though with a smaller hard drive). But, as always, the devil is in the details. The Pro is just $200 more but offers a higher-quality display, a far sturdier and wear-resistant metal body and frame, an SD card slot, a FireWire 800 port, and a second audio port. If you can't hack the price difference, we'll still thank you for your earnest generosity, but return it and pony up for the upgrade ourselves.
