Video: Camera Pro Chase Jarvis Preaches iPhone Photography

We walked New York's High Line with pro photographer Chase Jarvis, known for his empowering affirmation that the best camera is the one that's with you. These days, it's far more likely to be your phone's camera than a traditional shooter, and Jarvis suggests not sweating the lower quality sensor and lens. Sure, having a high-end SLR would be great, but what's more important, he says, is capturing the moment, be it a home run at a little league game or the way light is reflecting on a window. To that end, he's created Best Camera, an iPhone app that lets you shoot, apply multiple filters and effects, and share via Facebook, Twitter, e-mail, and the Best Camera photography community. Check out Jarvis's discussion of mobile photography, tips for shooting, and the app in the video after the break. We've also included some of his iPhone shots in a gallery to give you some ideas to get started.

If it's so great, why didn't you film this 4 min advertisement for your app WITH the iPhone. It's obvious you didn't. You used a high quality DSLR camera to do it, or a high quality, High Def camera. This is like looking at a soap box in the grocery store, and the box is bright and colorful, therefore ... my clothes will be bright and colorful? No. It's an illusion. Best quote, this is going to look like crap to some, and some might find it interesting. Like you 4 year old's hand drawn into a turkey.
I won't be buying the app.

IDK about the particular app. My computer is too slow to watch it, but a LOT of Apple, and IBM, and eBay's ads are shot. . . on 35mm film.

Well Nick, no humming or fingers in ears - just a desire to keep the Internet free of junk.. OR at least help reduce it.....! Like I said, a great phone and personal computer with some great apps - but for me at least, I prefer to keep it that way.. Oh, and by the way, Happy New Year and enjoy your iPhone!

Does anyone know where he filmed this I love the rooftop park with train tracks and everything. I'd love to visit it one day.

This article inspired me to continue shooting on the iPhone. It's not the camera but it's the one who shoot that makes a good photo. I got to check the apps out soon.

So far this app has done nothing but crash my phone every time it starts. I have a 3gs and it's NOT jailbroken or anything. I like the idea of it and would love to use it, but every time I try to load the camera (and of course I made that the default) it crashes my phone.

Anyone thats talking down about this situation obviously hasn't gotten the whole idea behind this video/link whatever. And seriously?.....talking trash about the sunglasses? Grow up. Hater.

You know what else would have been unheard of 10 years ago? Professionals, using 3MP cell phone cameras!
Even 35mm film, at its modern worst, still topped out at at least 8MP, more like 12-16 unless you were shooting 1600 film at football games without a flash.
And flashes waste energy? Not getting the picture because you shutter speed is too low is a waste of your time.
I have yet to see an intelligent comment in this thread, before mine.
The box brownie took 70mm film (100 exposures on a roll), had a manual F/stop and shutter speed control. Even if you were an "amateur" you knew how to use it or your pictures didn't come out.
Ever since disposable cameras came out in 1986 photography has taken a nose-dive.
Where has this notion that photography should be easy come from? Whether amateur or pro, a good picture takes a LOT OF WORK.

Jarvis has definitely influenced my photography, and turned the camera in my iPhone from a toy into serious instrument of visual communication.
I've always known it's the photographer, not the equipment, that counts most. I'm not sure I believed it. I've always known the importance of focusing in on what interests me and leaving out extraneous details. I'm not sure I believed it.
And the best camera app is a terrific tool.
