Dawn of a New Decade Signals an End to Classic Gadgets
A new decade rapidly approaches, and while the soon-to-be-departed Aughts have witnessed the birth of revolutionary gadgets and gizmos like the iPod, the same devices have rendered some classic objects obsolete. In a nostalgic look back, New York Magazine has cataloged 17 of the most notable items and pastimes that will inevitably be forgotten during the Teens, if they haven't been already. Sadly, some of them seem to indicate an unceremonious end to the wondrous and magical developments of the '70s and '80s.Say goodbye to answering machines, cassette tapes, fax machines, floppy disks, and the Rolodex. Joining those lost loves of Gordon Gekko in thrift stores across the world will be many other notable devices and products, like the good old fashioned cathode ray boob tube. (What are we supposed to call it now? Plasma and Liquid Crystal don't really lend themselves to snappy nicknames.) So, check the list and give a somewhat teary farewell to the gadgets and customs that helped define the last decade, and try to guess which items make the list 10 years from now. CDs, DVDs, and landlines would probably be a pretty good start. [From: NY Mag]
