'Mark The Spot' iPhone App Reports Poor AT&T Coverage
Depending on how you look at it, AT&T's new 'Mark the Spot' iPhone app is either an admission of defeat, or an honest attempt to improve customer service by locating dead zones. We'll give AT&T the benefit of the doubt and say it's both. The free app, distributed by AT&T, allows you to report dropped calls, failed calls, data failure, poor voice quality, and even a complete lack of reception -- all with the help of the iPhone's built-in GPS, which automatically pinpoints your location. In addition to specifying the location and type of problem, you can also include additional comments such as, "Seriously, this is a major metropolitan area. How is there no service?" -- even followed by a torrent of obscenities, if you so wish.
It seems like this app could easily be held against AT&T in its ongoing war with Verizon ("Want to tell AT&T how much its coverage sucks? There's an App for that."), but we're holding out hope that AT&T might actually take the reports seriously, identify weak areas, and improve service. We're doing our part. For those app developers that don't know Objective-C and Cocoa Touch and don't want to outsource development, check out localbeacon (an iphone app builder) at www.bigforge.com. Great for those who want to build just one app or developers interested in white label.
