Michael Jackson and Sonic Collaborated, Magazine Confirms

Four months after his shocking death, Michael Jackson continues to make headlines, and his legend continues to grow. His name's been atop music charts worldwide, a movie documenting his last scheduled concert was a box office hit, and now, a long held rumor about his collaboration with Sonic the Hedgehog has reportedly been confirmed.

Black & White, a French magazine devoted to everything MJ, has apparently said that Jackson was behind the soundtrack for 'Sonic 3,' according to a post on the online gaming forum VGMdb.net. Composer Brad Buxer, in an interview with the fan mag, reports that he and Jackson "did compose music for the game," which first came out 15 years ago. The King of Pop, however, was apparently less than thrilled with how it sounded on the Genesis, and asked that his name be removed from the game, since he didn't want anything to do with "a product that devalued his music."

Speculation had been brewing for a while now, spurred by attentive fans who noticed similarities between the game soundtrack and Jackson's previous work (see examples after the jump), yet there hadn't been any verdict until Buxer's interview. The composer also claims that the two hadn't really considered any melodic overlap between MJ's opus and the tracks, though he does claim that samples of the closing credits for the game were later used for Jackson's single, "Stranger in Moscow."

It may not be the typical fodder for Jackson headlines, but it's gotta be somewhat comforting for MJ-philes to uncover these kinds of historical tidbits now that he's passed. More importantly, though, who ever knew there was a magazine devoted entirely to Michael Jackson? How many other celebrities will ever be able to claim that kind of fandom? We're getting misty.
