Facebook Photos Lead to Underage Drinking Fines
We've seen wives pose as teens to bust cheating husbands and collections agencies impersonate cute girls to catch debt dodgers, but this is the first time we've ever heard of police using their precious time to send teens friend requests on Facebook just to troll their photos for evidence of underage drinking.Students at the University of Wisconsin - La Crosse have found themselves on the wrong end of a seemingly major sting operation. According to the La Crosse Tribune, at least four students from the school have been invited to court and fined for underage drinking over the past few weeks. The pieces of evidence presented in all the cases have been photos taken from the students' Facebook pages. One of those in trouble, Adam Bauer, told the Tribune that he believes the photos were obtained by police who posed as a "good-looking" 19-year-old girl and sent him a friend request about a month ago. Shortly thereafter Bauer was asked to come into the local police precinct.
Bauer wasn't shy about sharing his feelings about the methods, either, making allusions to '1984' and saying, "They are always watching." Another student busted on Facebook, sophomore Tyrell Luebker, called the practice "shady" and "a waste of taxpayer money," when interviewed by the Tribune. Luebker and Bauer aren't in the minority, either. Fellow sophomore Brianna Niesen worried that the practice would discourage students from calling police to report serious crimes for fear of being nabbed for underage drinking.
We certainly don't condone drunken youngsters here at Switched, but we do find ourselves agreeing with the students on this one. Police have better things to do than troll Facebook and MySpace, hunting for photos of college kids holding 40s. [From: La Crosse Tribune]

The police are nothing more than a criminail organization themself. entrapment...have you seen 'bait car' on tru tv? that is against the law? the police dont care about the law. they just want to get paid. cops are just as bad if not worse than criminals. how many cops have u seen turn their lights on just to get thru a light? thats illegal? their may be criminals out their that deserve to b caught, there is no doubt about that. but if you've noticed an increase in ticket fines, it is all bull""hit to get more money for local state gov'ts. maybe they should worry about REAL crimes!!!! the driniking age in portugal is 16. i kno that its not that here. but u dnt here portugal bit""ing about drinking age and underage drinking arrests all the time there. OBAMA LIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Know one seems to answer a basic question. How do the police know what is in the cups? That is some divine power. Also, people are innocent until proven guilty before a jury of their peers. Right now, the police only have accusations. Charges do not equal conviction.
The police know that most americans cannot afford decent lawyers. So, they get a way with this.

Did you read the story? Every one of them charged with underaged drinking pleaded no contest, a sign they all cut deals to avoid heavier penalties. None of them fought it. They've already been sentenced and paid their fines.
This is all just whinging about getting caught. None of them had the guts to back up their words with a court defense.

Oh they were asked to come into the police precinct. That is hilarious. If they were "asked" then they shouldn't be any trouble for not showing up.

Yes Obo, you moron, I did read the whole story. You must be a police officer because you live in the land of delusion along with every other law enforcement officer.
I have had to plead no contest. Because all the witnesses were pigs. And the judge sided against and said I could afford my on attorney (I could not). But that did not matter. The judge just thought I could. So, it was bankrupt my self. Spend untold amount of time fighting the charge. Or, pay a combined $3000 fine (which I had to borrow), take an anger management course and the record would be exspunged. Lets see tens of thousands of dollars for a lawyer, plus the lost money in lost wages because I would had have to quit my job.
Everyone one of theses 19 year old did not have the money to fight so they had no choice but too role over and make a deal.
Police should not be hanging out in chat rooms to bust 19 and 20 year olds for drinking. This is a waste of time and tax payer dollars anyway you cut it. All cops are corrupt. The whole system is corrupt. I don't think police should be allowed to lie about who they are.
It must be nice to have cops as friends and to be able to look down on and judge everyone else.
A lot of regular people are trampled on by cops because some judge will rule you can afford a judge based off he or she just thinks you can but most actually cannot so they have to enter these no plea contest.
It took everything I had to get the $3000. No way could I have borrowed for an attorney. I asked over a dozen lenders. My max amount I could borrow was $3000. How convient it was the exact amount I needed.
All college kids are thinking is I want to return to my life and they roll over and do not think about what they are doing. Everyone of these kids is innocent and all the cops involved should be fired.

Well I think you're anti-cop attitude seems to go a bit far with the whole system is corrupt crap. I've heard that so many times before, and if you don't mess with the system, they don't mess with you. Seems like you have been burned before, and I sympathize for you. But you assume that your past treatment will be repeated on the students. Who knows if the judge would have determined their necessity to pay for a lawyer differently? No one because they never challenged because perhaps they knew they've been caught red handed.
I'm sure there were other confounding evidence that led to the accusation of underage drinking. I doubt a judge would let charges be filed under a pretense that the cups had alcohol in them.

If this was done without benefit of warrant, Facebook should prosecute whoever impersonated the 19-year-old "girl" who sent the bogus friend requests. An officer committing wire fraud by pretending to be a civilian teen girl in order to gain illegal assess to another citizen's private, password-protected photos is every bit as much a federal felony as an adult posing as a teen in order to harrass an actual teen into commiting suicide -- a case that has already come up in Missouri. Oops, on second thought, that won't work. The officer will claim that he didn't need a warrant under the Patriot Act, because we all know how many thousands of lives have been lost to teen drunks committing terrorist attacks after converting their empty beer, tequila and Jack Daniels bottles into Malatov cocktails!

Sherry wrote, "These people are our law enforcement officers, not watching pedophiles, but watching our college students . . ." Sherry, did you ever think that maybe this officer was watching kids instead of criminals because HE is a pedophile?

I just love how the police have nothing better to do then go fishing like this. They will do just about anything to justify thier jobs. I would love to know how the charges could hold up in court. Anyone charged with the offense can just say all I had in the bottle was ice tea or water can they really prove what was in the container from a picture?

You guys here at switched are retarded if you don't think underage drinking is a problem!
