Facebook Displays Couple Photos When They Get Engaged
The latest Facebook redesign has been begrudgingly accepted by the whiny masses, and now that everyone has stopped complaining and started actually paying attention, some interesting new features are being revealed. One of those tweaks, caught by Nick O'Neill at All Facebook, is how relationships now appear in the news feed. Specifically, when friends get engaged, the corresponding update is automatically accompanied by a photo of the couple in order to help the post stand out.It seems that Facebook randomly selects a photo in which both halves of the couple are tagged, and places it next to the relationship status update in the news feed. It's a subtle, but nice, touch that adds a little more personality to the often ignorable changes in people's romantic entanglements.
O'Neill wondered if the photos would also be applied to posts about anyone entering a new relationship, but we can tell you they aren't (photographic evidence below). We were unable to find any recently engaged friends in our own Facebook feeds, so we can only rely on O'Neill's post and his image (above) for confirmation.

We expect that some people might be unhappy about the new feature. The photo draws more attention to changes in relationship status, already a touchy subject among many. Posting with regards to romantic activities is seen by many as either an unnecessary complication of personal relationships, or as a way to affirm commitment to a partner -- the modern form of giving a girl your varsity jacket. Facebook has been doing this for years -- at least as far back as 2006 when they first introduced teh news feed, if not longer.

Actually the relationship status for couples does show picture for some. I'm not sure what the cause is for that since I've seen some that do and some that don't. Maybe picture privacy settings?
