Love for Our Tweeps: People Answer 'What Is Twitter?'

Since people are now apparently tweeting 27 million times a day, this should come as no surprise. Not only do we chronicle our outrage over a contentious election via tweets, the Twiteratti have even taken to academic discourse. A zeitgeist has been ignited by 140-character streams of culture.
So what answer most aptly captured the Twitter Experience? "Like, if someone's going to the bathroom, you can know that...I guess that's when they tweet." Precisely.

It was hilarious when that girl said "Like, if someone's going to the bathroom, you can know that...I guess that's when they tweet."

Conduct a "Man on the Street" interview of people in malls etc.. Now let's ask the American public something relevant. Ask people to name at least one current member of our military who has voluntarily put him or herself in harms way for those of us who choose not to... Ask them how important to our sons and daughters who are doing the fighting and dying in places like Afghanistan and Iraq, "Twitter" is. The answers I've gotten are somewhat disturbing. As the majority of my fellow Americans are more likely to be able to tell you all there is to know about some merit less celebrity. Or something as "Pathetic" as "Twitter"... I wonder, can you "Twitter" the very real images of our children returning Stateside in a steel box covered by an American flag? Every one of my fellow Americans needs to face each day with the current body count as well as those images of steel boxes that the higher powers keep us from seeing... We don't need our senses numbed by insipid electronic devices or childishly named computer sites and services. Please, someone tell me, how are these things keeping our brave and selfless military personnel safe and focused on their mission of standing out front for the rest of us? God help this out of touch society. And here is some real food for thought, next time your done "Texting" something real significant out at the mall. If you see a "Volunteer" in the uniform of this nation's military, do more than some empty gesture like a weak "Thank You"... Tell them that you know that they are the only thing between you and a "Draft"... That you sincerely thank them for being able to keep you own children from returning in a box. Yeah, I know what "Twitter" is.... Now ask me something a little more "Grown up"...

Thanks, PJ for your comment. You took the words right out of mouth, this nations young people have gone the ole shi**ter. What has happened to the English we use to speek? I asked a young man how he got to a certain place one day and he looked at me and said "I took my Whip" what the hell is a Whip other then something to push cattle around! sure hope he didn't get hurt!....God help us!!
RachaelNov 15th 2009 6:03PM
Basically, twitter is a site where you type comments all day long, if you so desire. tell people when you have to pee, what you're eating, who you're texting, that you need to water your plant, you haven't done your homework, you're planning on uploading those pics to facebook soon don't worry, how to make hot chocolate (?), your new cat is extra-specially adorable, you just put your hair in a messy bun... etc etc etc.

It's unpleasent that some people can't live optimistic lifestyles. If we all sat around all day and the only thing anyone ever thought about was death and war overseas, we'd be a depressed species. Do you ever stop and think that mindless activities are exactly what makes people happy? Keeps them from losing their mind. Do you not think that even our soldiers try their best to enjoy them, and that they'd want us sitting around depressed and fixated on nothing but pain and suffering. I'm sorry for you. That you actually don't know how to relax or unwind. I'm also sorry that you may have lost someone overseas or you may not. But think about it this way, not everything has to be about that... and some people just like to loosen up. Get over the fact that pleasure is an important part of our society, and by whatever means necessary it's going to be out there. And if your so anti happiness then why don't you get off the internet, stop watching videos about twitter, and DO something about it.

Twitter is a website. Tweets are what the people do. The people that tweet are called twits.
watdafukNov 15th 2009 5:59PM
It`s for twits.
kathleenNov 15th 2009 6:25PM
its for people who have a lot of time to waste................and serves basically no purpose, not even a business, simply do to the fact, you'd have to be staring a screen all day long to see some bussiness's updates, and for what?
nothing, thats what. Twitter, a waste of time for twittering tweeter twits
Richard PiszNov 15th 2009 6:53PM
Twitter is nothing else than one of many symptoms of the decline and cultural downfall of America. While other nations are rebuilding, studying, and moving ahead of us educationally, financially, and morally, Americans...especially kids...are tweeting, twitting..whatever...their lives away and filling their vacuous minds with nothing more than fun, fun, fun. This is not the time to have fun. This is the time for some hard work. But then again, we are a spoiled-rotten, consuming, gluttonous hedonistic society, compared to the Depression babies and all who came before them. History demonstrates that civilizations, like living organisms....are born, they thrive, and then ultimately die. America already has one foot in the grave ~~~ head-in-the-sand Pollyanna opinions notwithstanding! (just one indication of far we have declined: among developed nations, USA came in 23rd on math and science achievement tests...a total disgrace.
And we wonder why? And the kids twitter on......and on......a nation of nothing more than talking, insipid heads.
MichaelNov 15th 2009 7:20PM
To PJ and John and Richard (And Krystal)
Geezuz fellas. Read krystals comment. Get a clue.
Twitter has its values too, its not just people telling everyone they are pissing.
To Richard Specifically: 23rd? Don't you ever think that 300 million math geniuses from the U.S. would be a bit excessive. Go ahead check, we have plenty of kids that rock upper level math classes. You do realize we have the 3rd most populous nation right? We need jacks of all trades fella, not just science geniuses. You cant take statistics like that without context bro
To John Specifically: If your gonna rag on people about their english grammar then you should spell check your sentence. The word is "SPEAK" not "SPEEK", and the proper way to say it would be "The english we USED to speak" You only use the expression "USE to speak" if it follows "did" or "didn't" as in, "Did you use to have a life?"
And finally to PJ: If you cant see that twitter has actual real value, and can change how we do certain things, then I'm not really sure why you own a computer and I cannot help you.
EddyRapconNov 15th 2009 7:22PM
A twitter is a chemical embalance causing a mental defect which results in ambigous response from the tweeter area of the cortex membrane. It is a message informing you that you may be to stupid than to dittle your computer.

Is Krystal now or has she ever been a member of the U.S. military? Has she ever been put in harm's way? Has she ever done anything for this country in exchange for her freedom and citizenship? It's a very "Real" world out there and the question is not about how ludicrous it is to waste good money and time on these distractions. Nor is the issue one of not expressing ourselves as Americans by partaking in the things that make us happy or provide a little bit of pleasure in our lives. The point that is often overlooked is that no matter which way you slice it, the members of our military have been overlooked and ignored by an "Opiated" society of "Must Haves"... The point is this, it is my "Freedom" as it is yours, to comment on this in any way that I or you wish to... And all that freedom comes from not sitting on one's ass and letting someone else's kid bleed for you so that you may enjoy these freedoms. Yes, seriously do something about it... The point is not about hate and discontent. It is in fact about a very spoiled and self entitled culture that prevails with regard to who provides the means to our pleasures and freedoms. Enjoy life as it ends for all very quickly. But in the meantime at least go beyond some imbecilic comment about the killing of pleasure because you may be asked to help pay the bill for those pleasures... Please don't overlook "Mindful" activities too. Relaxing and unwinding is my number one activity, thanks. Yours seems to be an attempt to portray the American people as "Simpletons" who seek out a path that is not challenging or that may actually produce something good and tangible. I happen to think a bit higher than you in the abilities and greatness of a people who will look beyond what is handed to them and embrace and celebrate what they have actually contributed. Let these diversions flourish as the "Toys" that they are for those who wish to use them. That is one of our freedoms, courtesy of "Guess Who"? If you want to see a depressed species sometime, take a tour of the Pentagon. I have decided not to "Get off the Internet and stop watching videos about Twitter", as you feel you have every right to order me to do because you "Disagree" with me. Get with it Krystal, you too have to share, even if it means someone else has an opinion you don't care for. i have an idea, why not get off the internet and stop worrying about stomping on other peoples rights. It would be the American thing to do... I can drive you to the recruiter's office if you like...
EddyRapconNov 15th 2009 7:33PM
If you chose to watch any news report on network or cable television then you already know the difference between a twitter and a tweeter. The one of the left is a twitter and the one on the right is a tweeter.
p. nichyporNov 15th 2009 7:39PM
Michael, this is "Twitter"... This is "Fun... This is how we can "Agree" to "Disagree"... Keep feeding me, I'm hungry to consume more...

I am 67 years old & twitter, what a great & quick way to communicate ideas.
I'm retired but my computer and phone have helped me communicate with people of all ages. We learn about things @ a speed that was imposable 10 years ago.
I think that is a good thing. I am @ this moment passing ideas for a web page.
I love it.

Idunno what TWITTER stands for. However, in German it stands for the physical abnormality a person is born with. Meaning: having both, male and female sexual organs. Such an individual is being called a "Twitter" (twice-both). It is NOT a term for an sexual orientation (bi-sexual for example) . I hope I did not offend someone here, I really don't mean to. Dankeschoen.
