Judge Confiscates Boy's Wii, Will Return for Good Behavior
Parents know that if you want t to get an unruly kid's full and undivided attention (and make them tremble either out fear or anger), all you need to do is hide the TV remote, disconnect the WiFi, and take away the video game controllers.A Canadian judge, who must be a parent, recently carried that family practice over to his courtroom when he ordered a young ruffian to hand over his Nintendo Wii. The Winnipeg Sun reports the troubled boy had been involved in numerous problems at school, including fights and instances of vandalism, so Judge Marvin Garfinkle decided that the creative confiscation of the Wii, and the promise of its return given certain requirements, might inspire the boy to curb his ways.
Some U.S. gamers might consider this the epitome of cruel and unusual punishment, but these types of atypical sentences, particularly for non-violent offenders, might be exactly what overcrowded U.S. prisons need. And, the sentence definitely beats getting sent to those teen boot camps. [From: The Winnipeg Sun via Yahoo]

Im 17. I was spanked as a child. I can tell you personally that the whole "take away the kid's wii" thing doesnt work NEARLY as well as a good old fashioned spankin'. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE video games, but getting spanked always had me afraid of doing the wrong thing. I graduated from school last June and I had a perfect 4.0 GPA. FROM 1ST GRADE ALL THE WAY THROUGH 12TH. Not because they "took away my video games" but because they spanked me. Parents are too easy going these days. When I have children, they will be spanked.

My daughter is very well behaved, and I have never had to "Whoop" her. Violence only teaches violence.

dcc10n: Dr. Spock's children are both still alive. Do your research! Urban legends only show ignorance in believing everything you read.
As for Jeff - a little angry? Hope you're not a parent...

Thanks for letting me know that. I could see this happening here though!

If the other methods of discipline won't work then there's no other choice but to spank. Can't see a way out of it sometimes.

For the Jerks that think smacking your kid around is the way to raise a child. I hope they turn around and stick your A&& in a home as soon as possible and never visit even before you need to be there. They will never respect you or want to be a part of your life after a childhood of hitting. Learn to respect your children as humans and not animals and find a way to take care of bad behavior without the beatings. Unless your lack of education prohibits it.

Jeff: Anger issues? Let's hope Jeff isn't a parent. By the way, it's "they're, not there." Come on, proper grammar isn't so difficult.

You have to get creative in child punishment these days. I was spanked as a child and the children in my family have all turned out to be upstanding adults. Try the same method today and you will in up in jail on child abuse charges. My wife let me know real quick that she would not allow our children to be spanked like I and my three brothers were so I had to come up with other punishments which I don't believe worked as well.

I hope the kid is not allowed to visit with his friends or at least the mother passed it on to his friends parents about the punishment. Kids are smarter than you give them credit for. He'll be able to go to a friends house and play the game with his friends.

I don't like sentences like that because it trains kids to think that it's natural and permissible for someone in authority to confiscate the property of someone under their authority. This runs contrary to the property rights that we in western civilization hold dear.
It starts with judges confiscating teens' video games and ends up with judges, cops and anyone else in authority confiscating our cars, homes, etc.
