'World of Warcraft' (
WoW) is painfully popular in
China. So much so that, out of WoW's roughly 13 million subscribers, 4 million are in China -- almost a third of the company's customer base. Considering the large portion of revenue coming from the psuedo-communist country, WoW publisher
Activision Blizzard, is probably having a mini freak-out right now as WoW has again been blocked by the Chinese government.
This isn't a first. In fact, the multiplayer online game was only relaunched in China this September, but internal quarrels (surprisingly, not censorship) have again shut it down. It seems that the General Administration of Press and Publication and the Ministry of Culture can't agree on whose jurisdiction WoW falls under, and until they either reach an solution (or battle to the death), China may not have access to WoW.
Of course, Chinese gamers are quite the dedicated and obsessive bunch (they even have a
WoW-themed restaurant!) so we're sure they'll find a way around the blockade -- like logging into servers in neighboring Taiwan. [From:

As video games increasingly garner criticism and blame for youth violence, sex, and generally unruly behavior, some titles deserve recognition for their artistic merits. Mixing surreal and serenely colorful graphics with imaginative gameplay, numerous titles transcend the negative perceptions. Perhaps titles such as these will help ease the stigma of video games as a corruptor of youth, and instead focus more attention on their positive attributes.
Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess:
One of the first releases for Wii, Twilight Princess continues to inspire gamers with vast landscapes and mesmerizing graphics.
Resident Evil:
Any of the games in the series could qualify but we'll go with IV because of the zombies with chainsaws. That's art.
Half-Life series:
Originally dismissed as being too ambitious, the first Half-Life ultimately won numerous awards and is widely considered to be one of the greatest games ever.
Final Fantasy series:
The detailed graphics and sprawling worlds have captivated countless gamers.
Prince of Persia:
The artistic merits of this series arise from unique fighting moves and gameplay amid incredibly deatiled and colorful backdrops.
Marvel Ultimate Alliance:
Ultimate Alliance allows gamers the chance to create their own dream teams, with great attention to detail given to the comic book (another undervalued art form) heroes.
Parasite Eve:
The creative imagery and storyline produce an entrancing and surreal experience for participants.

Good for them ! They seem to know what's best for their country, unlike us. First they ban children from families that either can't handle them or can't afford them; then they ban procreation altogether until their economy picks up. Now they say "get your a$$ off the computer and get back to what's important" . I hate communists but I like their style. Good job.

This is the most ridiculous thing ive ever heard, we cant figure out whos jurisdiction the game falls under because we have the worst form of government in the world so no one here is allowed to play the game because were all too stupid to form a democracy. Just add more fuel to the fire for your own citizens to hate you, good job.

Shut up! The great and glorious People's Republic must march forward towards further triumphs and world control. We Chinese, the chosen people of the 21st Century, cannot waste time with games and distractions. Onward Chinese citizens! Lay aside the trinkets of decadent tribes and live on the side of civilization.

Say what you want about Chinese, but their food is great.

China's economy is in shambles? HA!! What country do you live in? Scratch that. Do you live under a rock? Do your research before you write books, it'll at least make you seem well read. The only reason China's economy took a down turn was because of the Recession, that started here in the United States. China's economy has grown significantly since the hit while the United States is still barely recovering. And when they sell food to other countries, it's called EXporting.

So you want big brother in the bedroom.
Maybe you are not a communist, just some OTHER kind, of fascist.

I love the comments by the young and foolish on this board. These kindly little smiling people have quietly over the span of 40 years bloodied and killed over 60 million people. They understand how to control population they just remove dissenters by lining them up and shooting them in the back of the head. Our nation has turned into a nation of soft fat children that produce nothing and are too stupid to climb the stairs out of mommy and daddies basement. I for one am glad my generation is ready to leave this world and it is very obvious how you will leave. As the recipient of one of those population controlling bullets from a smiling Chinese nice person. Have penny?

paranoid much??? qaqs9000, chinese ppl are like every everybody else some of them are great others not so much. u smile at the young and foolish but honestly ur not so smart urself. It's pathetic rly, ur old, sitting in ur armchair thinking back to the "good old days" while we're young and open minded. it's ppl like u who rly piss me off. u hav no idea what ur talking about, u cannot just judge a nation by looking at what others did.
Seriously, u go ahead and live the rest of ur bitter life and die however u want to. i just hope that my generation doesnt end up as sad as u

I'm surprised this happened at all. Most media is banned in China for dirtying the Chinese reputation or because it contains information about other government types or accidents that the government caused, such as the crisis with the milk back in 2008. And this falls into none of them. It seems pretty strange to me that the game is being banned because of two groups can't decide who has authority over this. I don't don't agree with banning it over such a conflict. It seems petty to me. The Chinese government should be more worried about North Korea having escaped its leash, not about a video game. It really shows you just how much they value control over the citizens.

Americans are criticizing China for government restrictions on games played over the Internet? Huh???? There's some saying about throwing stones in glass houses coming to mind here. Look, the United States made online poker ILLEGAL in 2006, via passage of the UIGEA. That's right, ILLEGAL. Conservatives (who espouse wanting to get government out of our lives -- yeah right) passed the criminalization of funding online poker and gambling accounts. Poker, the American game. Played by Presidents. Played on the battlefield by our soldiers. That's the poker that is banned by THE UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT on the Internet. Where is your indignation on this???? Americans crawl out of the woodwork to criticize China (rightly so) when we here in this nation can't even play in a small stakes poker game or bet $20 on a football game. Get your own house in order before you scream at the Chinese, people.

It is true, we need to look at what our own government is trying to impose upon us. People complain about what China does, and rightly so, but come on people! Wake up and look at what this Socialist administration is trying to do to the country. This needs to stop NOW! Use our democracy and get these people out.
