Blackmail
Sending any personal info or incriminating pictures to someone on Facebook is a huge mistake for many reasons. One of the worst possible outcomes is getting blackmailed for money, sex, or, well, anything these sickos dream up. Really, whether they're using a fake profile or not, it's a horrible idea. Read up on the story of an 18-year-old who blackmailed 31 male classmates after he posed as a girl and asked for nude pictures. That's lesson enough.
Impostors
Sure, it can be harmless to impersonate a celeb online or create a fake profile for a movie character. But seriously, there's a definite line you shouldn't cross when pretending to be someone else and it can lead to dire consequences for you. Maybe it's not as extreme as the Moroccan man who was jailed for 43 days after creating a fake Facebook profile of a prince, but you never know. Just steer clear of it.
Self-Incrimination
Do we really have to explain this? Just look up the shoplifter who posed with her stolen merchandise, the many photos of drunk underage teens, and, most recently, the album featuring a couple who killed and ate an endangered iguana in the Bahamas.
Suicide
Social networking sites has been blamed for a lot of things, fairly and unfairly, but in our opinion, the worst offense has been their indirect involvement in suicides. Obviously, there are a lot of factors responsible in each case, but there does seem to be links between social networking and a rash of suicides, and obviously tehre's the case tragic of Megan Meier, who killed herself after a classmate's mom impersonated a teen boy and harassed her over Myspace.
Murder
We've reported on numerous incidents of people getting in trouble because of their online behavior. Now, people are becoming victims because of what they're doing on the Web too. In England, a man was convicted of murdering his estranged wife after she changed her relationship status to "single." So, be careful of who can see your profile and what you're doing, no matter how harmless it seems.
Nigerian Scammers
Oh, you thought this only happened via poorly worded emails, right? WRONG. Once people got wise to their old ways, these con men are turning to social networking sites for new targets. This time, they're hacking into people's accounts and impersonating them to ask for money, usually with some weird sob story. You can check out a transcript of one of these conversations here.
Cooperation
Even if the law isn't on a case, a victim, his friends, or empathetic strangers might be. Since it's easy to get word out for anything online, people are using blogs, forums, and social networking sites to help track down criminals. In one such case, a vehicle thief was tracked down by a bunch of anonymous car enthusiasts after the victim posted his story on a forum. In the end, they identified the guy through his Facebook profile.
Self-Incrimination
Do we really have to explain this? Just look up the shoplifter who posed with her stolen merchandise, the many photos of drunk underage teens, and, most recently, the album featuring a couple who killed and ate an endangered iguana in the Bahamas.

Kid needs to learn that these kinds of jokes aren't funny. Don't think he should be charged as an adult, but he should be charged and punished.

What a waste of resources. Boys who cry wolf make it hard for anyone to be taken seriously. It wasn't that long ago that Abraham Biggs Jr. did so on webcam and no one took him seriously, some viewers even egging him on. Of course, he really went through with it, which is probably a contributing factor to why the police were called this time. Faking death isn't a funny prank under any circumstances. It's selfish and thoughtless.

To bad leaving spam in the comment section isn't a criminal offence.

The teens of the last couple of generations seem to be the most useless wastes of human protoplasm EVER. The spoiled, lazy, "plugged in" little bastards seem to have no other ambition than to be a pain in the ass to society, or to ponder what to pierce next. They drop out of school in droves, usually coddled by their brain-dead parents who usually wind up feeding and housing their evil spawn until they're AT LEAST 30. The future of America? It should scare the sh*t out of every responsible, contributing, citizen.

In my 5th grade science book was a picture of a rat with electric stimulators connected to the pleasure centers of the brain. The caption stated that the rat would decline food, water, and sex for electric stimulation of the brain.
I see no difference between the rat and a kid with a GPS, Ipod, Sat Radio, cell phone, etc. They're just doing the same thing as the rat and it is an addiction, just like opium or meth.

dave, these last generations are the smartest and most capable of any generation. For one, more information is taught in schools. Science is more factual, math goes to higher levels due to calculators and better teachers, children are being taught how to not get pregnant or contract an STD. did you ever learn that in school? also, tolerance for different religions, races, and sexes.
ipods and cellphones aren't the downfall of humanity, they give it a wider range of knowledge and connection. nobody is listening to one, all powerful band like the beatles. there is a range of small artists that can be heard by fans worldwide, regardless of genre. cellphones save lives, connect people, and give information. needless to say i have a great smartphone, would starve for it? no. the best part is the future generations will be better than the present.....so suck it.

I'm a teen, yet I agree with you Dave the society I'm growing up in is a load of shi** but you cant just blame it on us sometimes its the way we were raised. Some of us turn to the streets because we never got the attention we needed from our parents and others were laft with no choice. But I agree with you because we are old enough now to have ENOUGH common sense to aviod this yet we think its cool to be in a gang or treat people like sh** but it reality its not...and we ALL feel bad about it...me I was raised pretty isolated as a child and I depended a lot on my siblings and parents. My parents didnt allow me to go out with other kids and back then I felt like I was a prisoner and said some harsh things to my mom like "WHAT AM I YOUR PRISONER!?" and I feel bad for saying those things because now I'm glad my parents raised me that way...because well I'm not turning into garbage like most people :D

EXCUSE ME.
yeah im 15 years old & to say every kid is like that is just plain ignorance.
I'm sorry that i am growing up in an age where there is an abundance of new technology & that i use things like computers & mp3's & cellphones. What are you using right now? to say that im a "plugg-in" while your sitting at a computer desk is just hypocricy. Maybe next time you'll think about not labeling all kids the same.
amyleewannabeNov 21st 2009 12:57AM
Dave, To Type What You Did Is Pure Ignorance, Not To Mention Hypocrisy.
I Just Turned 18, I Am A High School GRADUATE, And Yeah, I'm "Plugged-In."
And There's Nothing Wrong With That At All. Not One Thing.
I Am NOT Spoiled Or Lazy.
Do I Drive?
No.
I Ride My Bike 6 Miles To See My Boyfriend.
And Then Another 6 To Get Back Home.
I Pay For The Things I Want.
Which Means I WORK.
Like A Lot Of People My Age I Have A JOB.
I Don't Get Money From My Parents.
Cuz Guess What?
Because Of The Economy Our Parents DON'T Have Money To Just Throw At Us.
To Call All Of These Past Few Generations A Waste Of Human Protoplasm Because We All "Seem" To Be Useless And All Of us Are The Same?
That's Like Saying All Asian People Look Alike.
They DON'T.
EVERYONE Is Different.
I'm Sorry You Grew Up Under A Rock.
But You Really Need To Think Before You Type Things.
Because You Just Made A PERFECT Example Of WHY My Generation Is The Way It Is.
Look At Who We Were Raised By, For Pete's Sake!
So Please Think Before You Type.
I'm Only 18 And I Know When To Say I'm Wrong.
Do You?
But I Digress.
Granted Not All Of Us Were Raised The Same, I Believe He wasn't Raised Right.
That Was Just A HUGE Cry For Attention.
I Know People Who Have Both Attempted And Committed Suicide.
And It's Not Funny.
steve3927Oct 24th 2009 11:16AM
Maybe he should have been "busted" in a different way a long time ago and learned proper behavior.
brdgingersollOct 24th 2009 12:58PM
This boy should be punished. Anyone willing to fake his suicide on the net. Should be comitted to a psych faility for a period of time. What is wrong with teens of today? Suicide is increasing. Is it due to stress, low self-esteem, or critical peers? Maybe schools need to teach more about depression and signs of suicide. suicide is not the answer your life may change tomorrow. If you take your own life you can't get it back. You get only one shot at life do your best to enjoy it. Seek out professional help if you are thinking about suicide.
breakitdown1990Oct 24th 2009 1:53PM
ok, this is a realled f'd up thing to to. i lost my sister to suicide almost 11 years ago, and my best friend to suicide almost 5 months ago. anyone who seriously thinks that something like this is funny is nothing but a lowlife who needs a SERIOUS crash course on humanity
breakitdown1990Oct 24th 2009 1:54PM
and i meant to say really, not realled
JOct 25th 2009 8:27AM
I think he should get the death penalty. That will deter future suicide pranks.
nkarategirlOct 25th 2009 1:26PM
Excuse me! Have a heart wth do you live in a dungeon! "Death Penatly" should be banned! If you kill somebody, you are no better than they are! People deserve to live out their lives and not to be killed! Im 13 and I think im smarter than you are! Death Penatities are unhuman and wrong. This kid was just trying to get attention. Doesnt that scream MOM DAD PAY ATTENTION TO ME! and not KILL ME! because he would of seriously done it if he wanted to die!!! You have a cold heart and probaly live alone.

I know a lot of smart kids who dropped out of school and went for GED because of the idiots running the schools.. Security guards who hate kids and will falsely accuse students, asst. principles who won't listen to students, teachers, or parents..
There are schools that have a day set aside for gays, you pay for a badge, and on that day you wear it and can't talk. You are excused from answering any questions in class..
I know of a school that cut back it's hrs. so kids have one less class a day.
We have a lot of young people dying in this area due to traffic accidents. Their choices are movies, bowling, or gathering in parking lots talking. Police chase them out of parking lots.. Pregnancies for kids are way up. Under age drinking is out of control.. Parents force their kids into sports, see a lot of kids with broken bones around here..
Kids need things to do so they have found a new one. Look at the news, Balloon
boy, look at the programs on tv and movies put out, sex and violence everywhere. What do we expect from kids, their idols are trash., really good rule models for our children. News telling kids if they are poor they don't learn as well as other kids. Politicans becoming rich off the tax payers.. That teaches kids that being dishonest rewards you. Illegals in our country, what part of illegal doesn't Washington understand? Ballots written in Spanish, I don';t understand that.. Yet, our military fighting over seas didn't get to vote because their ballots didn't get here in time.
HAZLIZ69Oct 25th 2009 12:58PM
As I expect a lot of criticism for what I'm about to write, this is a result on how the human race is fixated on reality tv. If people were more focused on their own lives, there wouldn't be enough of an audience to witness someone's faked suicide. SERVES US WELL.
LindaOct 25th 2009 1:59PM
A prank is a prank...where is everyone's sense of humour today? Let kids be kids, they have to become adults too fast as it is.
SilenceOct 25th 2009 4:22PM
This prank was not funny, and while it was sick and disgusting that someone did this, it's at least equally revolting that there are people encouraging
these kids to actually do it. We ALL need to learn some respect for life and respect for each other, irregardless of what generation we're from or how much technology we have. This message board is as much evidence of that as this
acticle.
