The Fray's Dave Welsh Is a Mac Man All the Way

If you've glanced at the Billboard charts, Rolling Stone magazine, or your little sister's iPod over the past few years, you're bound to have seen the name: The Fray. Fronted by the piano-caressing crooner Isaac Slade, this Denver, Colorado four-piece has brought the mellow sounds of Coldplay and U2 back across the pond to great popular acclaim; since its debut in February, the band's most recent and eponymous album has already reached Billboard's number one spot and been certified gold. Unsurprisingly for a band whose songs are so indebted to effect-heavy soundscapes, the boys of The Fray are as hooked on gadgets as they are guitar pedals. Here, in our latest Switched Questionnaire, Fray guitarist Dave Welsh tells us about his (and the band's) techno-lust.

What gadgets do you always bring with you to the studio for down-time?

I've always got a computer, my iPhone, iPod, and a decent pair of headphones.

What cell phone do you have right now and what do you love or hate about it?

I have an iPhone, out of necessity mostly. I love that it interfaces with my computer so smoothly, but it's just another thing that'll be out of date in six months.

Who's the last person you sent a text message to and what was it about?

I sent a message to my buddy Jeff telling him I'd meet him for coffee this morning.

Where do you go every time you get online?

I generally go to [drummer] Ben's blog to see what the hell he does in San Francisco.

What annoys you most about your iPod, cell phone, or laptop?

The dependency on technology of our generation bothers me. I have three typewriters at home for the day the computer dies.

Name one thing you wish your iPod/cellphone/laptop could do that it doesn't do now?

I wish the old iPhone worked with the new software update... Hmm...

What upcoming gadget can you not wait to get your hands on?

I've actually thought a lot about getting one of those electronic readers. I know I'm about two years behind, but better late than never.

You're stranded on a desert island: What gadget do you bring?

A book. A physical, dirty, used, smells-like-mothballs book. I'd read slowly, too.

What's the most-played song or artist on your iPod?

Right now? Probably the new Vetiver record. Such good summer music, especially if you find yourself on a road trip.

What's the longest time you've ever spent playing a video game in one sitting and what game was it?

Truthfully, I haven't played a video game in a decade. I opted for guitar instead.

Mac or PC?

Mac.

What's the most embarrassing or untrue thing anyone has ever said about you online?

Lately, it's simply doing a solo interview and then, when published, the source citing the interview's with Isaac.

Do you have an HDTV? If so, what kind and how big is it? What's your favorite show to watch in HD?

I do, but it hasn't been plugged in for about six months now. Cleansing, you know?

iPhone, Palm Pre, or BlackBerry? Why?

iPhone. Look at it. It's damn good looking.

What's the most embarrassing place your cell phone has gone off?

Interviews. Always classy, especially if it's live on the radio.
