New York Launches iPhone 311, Google Celebrates Barcode's Birthday

Highlights from this morning's other big tech headlines....
  • Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced last week that New York City will be unveiling a free iPhone 311 app as part of its Connected City Initiative. With the app, residents and tourists will be able to send text messages and photos about problems they encounter throughout the city. Next, Bloomberg should consider implementing a suicide and depression hotline. You know, for the city employees who have to answer all those angry texts from millions of ornery New Yorkers. • You've probably already noticed Google's homepage homage to the barcode, which turns the big 4-0 this month. Nerds and geeks everywhere have been trying to translate the code, which is supposed to say "Google," just so they can ridicule the site in case it's even slightly incorrect. Let's hope Google made it say, "Get a life, losers." [From: Tech Crunch]
  • Alexa, the 'Web Information Company,' recently released its ranking of the world's most popular Web sites. Google still holds the overall top spot, but Facebook has been making a steady push. It's even claimed the number one spot in several countries, including Bangladesh, Malaysia, and Indonesia. Look out, Google Hong Kong! You're next! [From: Alexa]
  • Facebook hopes that within the next 24 hours it can fix a recent "technical issue" that has been locking members from their accounts. When some members have attempted to sign in, a "down for maintenance" message has appeared, leaving thousands of distressed pleas for 'Mafia Wars' to go unanswered. [From: CNET]
  • Despite their almost constant bickering, journalists and bloggers really aren't all that different from one another. For 150 years, folks in the news room have been trolling the AP wire for the day's breaking news before they relay that information to the public. Apparently sick of those professional freeloaders, the AP is now planning to charge people to get an early, first look at the top stories. [From: Mashable]
