Our Daily Deal: 1GB DDR3 Laptop Memory for $0.99

After all, in these tough economic times, every little bit counts. We may not be buying Swarovski-covered iPods any time soon, but everyone needs essentials like a computer. So take a look at what the online deals site sent us today.
One way to make your tech dollar go a little further is to upgrade what you already have. One of the most effective and cheapest ways to make your PC move a bit faster is to install more RAM, and if you've got a laptop (or a Mac Mini) with only 1GB of memory, have we got a deal for you: a 1GB DDR3 laptop memory module for only $0.99 after a mail-in rebate. You'll still have to pay for shipping (a relatively hefty $5.99), but even then this OCZ module is half the price of Newegg's next cheapest offering of the same type and size.
Before you rush out and drop even this small amount of cash on the upgrade, though, make sure that your laptop will both accept DDR3 memory, and have room for the module. The easiest way to do this on a Windows PC is to download a utility called CPU-Z, which provides all sorts of detailed system information that many non-techies might find confusing. Thankfully, though, we're here to help. Once it's installed and launched, click on the tab labeled "SPD." Right away, at the top you should see a field that displays the type of RAM installed, usually either DDR2 or DDR3. Click the drop-down menu on the left-hand side that has entries for Slot #1 and Slot #2. If one of these slots is empty, or if both slots have a module size of only 512 MB (you'll see it listed right under the type), you're in business. Get yourself one (or two!) of these modules and boost your RAM to 2 GB.
On a Mac, you can check by clicking on the Mac menu, selecting "About this Mac," and clicking "More Info." On the left-hand navigation pane, under "Hardware," there is an entry for "memory." Click this and you'll see the contents of each memory "bank" (It'll look like this.) and what type of RAM is installed. Same rules apply here. If you see DDR3, and have either one empty slot or two 512 MB modules, get to ordering and make your computer move faster than ever before.
