Web Electioneering Gets the New Jersey Treatment
Campaigning via social networks worked so well for Democrats last election, especially for Barack Obama, that Republicans are rushing to embrace not only the tools but the tone of the 2008 Electioneering 2.0 fad. Of course, leave it to Jersey to take a perfectly reasonable idea like this and tackify it to the point of self parody. As it does most things, and we say this with tough love, New Jersey has hijacked social networking, given it an acid-washed, Aqua Netted, spray tanned makeover, and dubbed it, "It's My NJ." A culmination of hand-picked Twitter feeds, political infomercials, and profiles (which are really more like personal ads), the site is funded by the Chris Christie for Governor campaign.
The site features Twitter updates and blog posts from the Christie election team, as well as those of nine other "regular" New Jerseyans, including small business owners, students, and a blue-collar union boy. Of course, many participants in the project haven't updated since the site launched two days ago, and among those conspicuously silent is Christie's choice for Lieutenant Governor, Kim Guadagno.
Seems like not a lot of thought was put into the project, evidenced by the campaign's chosen representatives sending catty Tweets during class? ("dear girl in the back, our not so intimate class of 100 doesn't need your comment on everything. xo, me") And does Christie really find it hilarious to list his favorite genre of music as Bruce Springsteen? Why don't you just wear a Bon Jovi T-Shirt at all your campaign stops and change the 'It'sMyNJ' logo to a T-top Camaro?
To top it off, just check out the About page, which contains a rant that revels in unflattering stereotypes of New Jerseyans. The quote, written in 12 different colors and just as many fonts, looks like it belongs on the MySpace page of a 15-year-old, not the Web site of a political campaign. In case you think we're being too dismissive, please note the attitude of the aforementioned rant's author: it's attributed simply to "Anonymous." [From: It's My NJ]
