Boxer Picks Fight With Facebook Over Anti-Fan Clubs

It seems that British boxer and current WBA World Light-Welterweight champion, Amir Khan, may not have the thick skin necessary for life in the public eye. The boxer, and his promoter Frank Warren, are threatening legal action against Facebook over groups based around a hatred of him. The polarizing boxer has apparently inspired over 20 hate groups, which are filled with "defamatory and illegal content," according to Khan's lawyers.
Facebook's terms of service (and the company's actions in removing holocaust denying groups) make it clear that it will not tolerate what it deems as "hate speech." And while some comments by Khan-haters have racist overtones, can the act of disliking a sports figure really qualify as hateful?
Plenty of other celebrities, David Beckham and Lindsey Lohan for instance, are the subject of such anti-fan clubs on Facebook. Will such public figures join forces and "encourage" the social networking site to shut down such groups? Or will Facebook simply continue to "acknowledge" Khan's complaints until he quietly goes back to do what he does best -- beating up on mediocre boxers. [From: CNET and The Guardian]

It's a shame the comment sections have been ruined by jackasses trying to sell their crap.

Wow, is there a hate group for Kayne West? Or maybe I should ask, is there a group for the two people who like him? To his credit, the two people who like him don't include his dead mother.

facebook wont do a damn thing about it. they'll let this HATE group grow. facebook doesn't care about people or their feelings. all facebook cares about is MONEY. facebook constantly breaks their own TOS with impunity, but if you should do it... they persecute. by this guy going public with this, all he's doing is giving them free publicity, so they'll just let it keep on going....and going....and going

It seems like he is jsut someone who is trying to make a living, but can't handle criticism. Maybe because he has never had any or maybe becuase his culture has not taught him how to handle it when it does come, or maybe he is just a jerk at heart. From my experience with the middle eastern culture, they are never wrong and the males cannot take criticism at all. Too bad, he might have been a pretty good sports figure too, oh well, if he doesn't like it then he can just go home, we have enough snot nosed punks in this business anyway.

Way to give people another reason to hate you. Facebook should definitely police racism, but not people's desire to say how much they hate someone that sucks.
brodie wrightSep 14th 2009 11:38AM
There will always be people who love you and people who hate you, get over it! Facebook needs to embrace both groups of fans otherwise it would be a one-sided website if only positive groups were allowed. All facebook needs is a disclaimer at the top that says "some info posted here may be false, inaccurate and hateful" Simple as that.

He needs to grow a set, pull 'em around front, and friggin man up. It's Facebook...not Oprah. LOL.

In ILLinois it's illegal to say anything negative about or to a police officer. And it would be advisable not to say anything period in front of them as their always looking for an excuse to arrest innocent people. Other then that, as long as i'm out of ear shot of one our overzealous God-trippin nutjobs, I have the right to say however i feel about anyone or anything. However, everything you say or post on a social site should be said as if it was being proof read by one of these terrorists, i mean law enforcement, as it's obvious they troll the boards and videos just waiting for someone to slip up.

Just because people disagree with you, E, doesn't mean they need to go kill themselves. Grow up.

Really? He's gonna get mad about hate groups?
Miley Cyrus has just as many, if not double what this dude has. She hasn't threatened to sue Facebook. People are entitled to their opinions.
watdafukSep 14th 2009 1:45PM
Except when it comes to the holocaust stuff ?

Our society really over-uses the word "hate." Some things people don't like, approve of or support. That doesn't mean they hate them. Same with fear. This phobia or that phobia. Again it doesn't mean someone is fearful of something, it may just simply mean they don't like it, support it or approve of it. We are making a terrible mess of a beautiful language.

I thought Khan wore boxing shorts and not a skirt. Sticks and stones dude!
sae6000Sep 14th 2009 2:01PM
Hey - Mohamand Ali made millions off people that hated him. Brian Bosworth, and Simon Cowl (sp?) did the same.
Just take advantage of it
