12 Earth-Friendly Appliances for Your Home

Home appliances generally haven't been at the forefront of the green movement. While the Energy Star rating on some household gadgets has helped eco-warriors reduce their carbon footprint (and saved homeowners some money), it doesn't hold a candle to the devices that are designed to be green from the get-go. Switched.com decided to dig a little deeper – and found a dozen products that are truly earth-friendly.

Here is the problem with replacing appliance and vehicles and phones and computers etc. every time the next big thing happens. Sure you can save water on a new washer but if the one you have is five years old, what is the point. No one wants to discuss the costs involved with building new machines and disposing of old machines or for that matter, how long it takes to reach the break even point on the water bill. These types of articles are misleading and only benefit A: green geeks B: people who sell machines C: people in the recycle business. Gee Dell, Apple and all other computer makers, how green is forcing people to upgrade computers every two years because the hard parts of the current computers can't be upgraded (allegedly). Earth friendly, my aunt fanny!

I change my under wear and outer clothing once a year and insist on a 2 up of water washing machine. I like things clean. OOOOOOh tomorrow is wash day!

I'm ready to trash my Whirlpool Duet, which is 4 years old. Clothes don't get clean; pet hair doesn't get removed; clothes and towels "pill" much worse than in my old machine. There's just not enough water to do the job right, and there's no way to adjust the water level. I'm going to get an old-fashioned top-loading machine before they become illegal.

Most of this stuff is truly useless, even idiotic. I'm not crapping in a chest and storing it in my house then having to empty it out in the yard. That's just nasty. This nonsense is strictly for the environmental headcases.

I love my toploader machine that I have had since 1988. I have only had to replace one of the hoses.
