Facebook Openly Mimics Twitter With @Mentions

Tagging your friends on Facebook is limited to photographs, videos, and notes no longer. In an affront to Twitter, Facebook has introduced a new feature that allows users to tag friends in status updates using the @ symbol. Apparently, the hash tag, which had previously been unique to Twitter, will be gradually offered to Facebook users over the next few weeks.

Here's how it works: when you're updating your status, just type the @ symbol into the box. A menu will drop down and allow you to tag friends, groups, events, and even fan pages. After you make the tag, your friend (or group, or whatever) will be notified and receive a link to the post. This feature should make it much easier to navigate the social networking site, which has become jumbled with more apps, pages, groups, and individuals than a person can handle. Plenty of Facebookers will be hitting the 'Like' button on this update. [From: Facebook Blog, via Mashable]
