Best of the Week: Nature Vs. Tech, Disney Buys Marvel

As another long work week comes to a close, it's time once again to look back at the most significant, ridiculous, and awesome stories that we could find during our travels through the Tubes. Some of these you may have missed the first time, but others are definitely worth a second look, so, read on, and enjoy the holiday weekend!

  • Can humans really devise methods to control Mother Nature and weaken hurricanes or prevent global warming? We take a look at some nature vs. tech showdowns, and reveal who really has the upper hand: nature or science.
  • Five masked bandits pilfered 46 items from a New Jersey Apple Store in a mere 31 seconds. You can watch the smash-and-dash Apple Store spree thanks to some exciting high-quality security footage.
  • The number crunchers at Guinness have named 'Batman: Arkham Asylum' the "Most Critically Acclaimed Superhero Game Ever." Now, how about releasing a version for the Wii? Please?
  • It may seem a little sad that Mickey Mouse is now the Punisher's boss, but the Marvel-Disney deal has inspired some incredibly creative, and artistic, cartoon mashups. We're still waiting on an Emma Frost 'Snow White' creation, though.
  • Master of gore (and lover of horrifying hillbilly mass murderers) Rob Zombie kindly sat down with the Switched staff to discuss his hatred of gadgets (and those of us who may or may not be completely dependent upon them).
  • The tragic kidnapping, and heartwarming rescue, of Jaycee Dugard has been captivating people all week. For an actual glimpse into the depraved world of kidnapper Philip Garrido, Google Maps provides a bird's eye view of the alleged monster's backyard, and Street View may actually provide a glimpse of the man, himself.
  • If you happen to notice someone gesticulating wildly while you walk down the street, they may not actually be completely insane. Neuroscientist Michael Linderman is reportedly working on "imaginary pen" gloves that enable users to write simply by waving their arms.
  • More evidence has emerged to suggest that Apple may indeed open up the iPhone to carriers other than AT&T (specifically Verizon) by next summer.
  • Twitter hosted an ominous tweet from Adam Goldstein, aka DJ AM, prior to his tragic passing last week, and the site also hosted lamentations from hordes of Hollywood mourners.
