Vermont Teen Going to the Slammer for 'Sexting'
In recent years, 'sexting' has entered our lexicon, frightening the parents of teens with cell phones and other mobile devices. Now, lawmakers and judges are cracking down on the act, and, as a result, a Vermont teen is headed to prison.According to the Associated Press, 18-year-old Isaac Owusu will serve 90 days of a two-year sentence in a Vermont prison after pleading guilty to two counts of committing a prohibited act and one count of lewd and lascivious conduct this past Thursday in what was the state's first sexting case. It could've been worse for the teen from Morrisville, who told two teenage girls to send him videos or photos of them performing sexual acts. However, Vermont lawmakers recently decriminalized sexting, which led to sexual assault charges against Owusu being dropped as part of a plea deal.
Legislators say they passed the loosened sexting law because they didn't want teens to be labeled as sex offenders due to, in the words of the AP, "something so foolish." We doubt the parents of the two girls involved think this situation is "foolish," at all. While this young man didn't physically interact with these girls in any inappropriate way, his behavior is nevertheless unacceptable. Lawmakers need to send a hard message to teens: Sexting isn't okay. A reduced sentence doesn't accomplish that. [From: AP/ABC News]

Flat out absurd. If the girls sending the pictures and/or videos thats another thing, but if they were of age then I don't see how this can be against the law. and if both parties are under 18 the sentence if all should be very small. this is outrageous how they are reacting, go catch real criminals and stop ruining peoples lives without just cause

i think it's so stupid that adults are passing laws stopping us teens from doing this stuff...i wanna make it clear that i agree with them that sexting is stupid and wrong, but gee, wonder what they do in their spare time? are you trying to tell us that we should stop, and meanwhile you do it at the same time?? here's my suggestion, fix yourselves before you start shaking your fists at us. i think i speak in the name of all of us teens out there when i say: we dont take smack from hypocrites. so how old do we have to be to do this junk exactly? This Isaac Owusu guy was a legal adult. he was entitled to do whatever he wanted, just like adults or even porn stars out there, right? how is what he did any worse than going to a bar and getting a lap dance from a naked hooker?
to this Isaac Owusu guy, if you should ever read this, i want you to know that making you do time in the slammer was absolute BS. I'm with you all the way. im not saying i agree with the fact that u asked 2 girls to send you a porn film, but making you do time for it was one of the most hypocritical and stupid things i've ever heard.

Grow up. Who the hell is "you trying to tell us that we should stop, and meanwhile you do it at the same time"? No one. I'm only 26, but I damn well know stopping this before it escalates is a good idea. You're too young to maturely understand, or your maturity level is such that you don't understand, either way this needs to be stopped. We've got enough problems with people today. We don't need further mental issues. I mean you've got to be pretty insecure or just a big whore to consent to that. Dominique, I'm guessing you're pretty insecure.

You can make it illegal but you can't effectivley enforce a law such as this one, sooooo get over it.

Prostitution, the john and the prostitute get arrested right? The sexting, minor to adult, the adult for solicitation and the minor for sending child porn... minor to minor, both for sending child porn but no cell phone for either, not criminal charges. Adult to adult, stay out of my phone! If someone threatens over the phone for any sexting, report it or ignore it, but if you send it, it's your fault! Bottom line, let's be real, if you do not want the picture to be seen by others, don't take it or let it be taken. It will get out there. I don't care how sentimental one is when the picture is taken; do something to piss the person off who "owns" the picture and the world shall see. Period. Just ask my ex-girlfriend.

In the article it does not say everything that happened. According to Vermont local news (WCAX) Isaac had sex with the two girls at the High School. It is not just "sexting" that he is getting punished with.

Soliciting a lewd act is as illegal as offering... especially if one is a minor. ie. prostitution. You send a message to a person under 18 asking for illicit photos or video and it's as good as taking them yourself. Note to pedophiles... stick to the internet porn and stop encouraging the easily influenced kids.

The Just for Men commercial gets my goat when the 2 little girls ask their dad to dye his hair so he can go out on a date. He is a single dad and he is finally out on a date when he sends a picture of him and his date to his two little girls on a cell phone. Who the hell is watching the girls if he is out on a date?

It's time to stop throwing all our non violent criminals into jail with Violent criminals. What do U think is going to happen to them. We need to look at the European countries who have less violent crime and a lesser % of their population in jail. Why do we want to screw up a teenagers life for stupidity? We spend too much money on incarcerating non violent criminals. It all stems from political jobs for supporters. Have law enforcement spend their time on the big fish and less time on the non violent people.

Is anyone actually reading ALL the charges?? I have read some of these comments and boy, have they went straight over someones head!! Also, just because the girls were 14 doesn't make them angels either. Kids are having sex at 10 and 11 now so by 14 they are veterens. Sad but true. Parents don't have a handle on their children like they use to in the "OLD" days. Too much involvement in everything opens up opportunity for something else. This doesn't ring true for every kid mind you but its happening more and more. It use to be said to keep a child busy keeps them out of trouble. Is this right? Not anymore in this tech age. The boy got what he deserved because the lawmakers have to start somewhere. Some one has to be the "example". I just wish that they done something to the girls in the same respect. It takes two to tango!!

Oops, I guess they can do it because they just did!! Plus, its only the beginning. Do you honestly think that your phone calls are private?? The government can access stuff from your phone anytime, anywhere and you can't stop them. Think about that the next time you take a nasty picture and send it!!

if you watched the episode of tyra, they show several "GIRLs" that are sending the nude pics and sexting also. do you think they're going to arrest teenage girls for sending the guy dirty texts? NOOOO. it's a dbl standard. the boy should be arrested for the physical contact w/ the girls. arresting people for sending inappropriate texts is the dumbest thing i've ever heard. unless, the person is sending them to you w/out you wanting them should it be a crime. only in our dumb country can you arrested for a dui & go home but, get arrested for dirty text msg's and do time. they could arrest kids all day long from myspace for dirty chat. why not arrest them for talking dirty on the home phone as well. i would like to see them take nice suburb girls, w/ good grades, that send their b/f pics of themselves & sexting locked up...it will never happen...because it's dumb!

OK the laws that are meant to protect our "innocent" youth are the same laws that judges are putting them in jail for....hhhmmmmm. America just likes to lock people up. The moral highground should be preaching education. Where I grew up no self respecting teen would flash someone let alone immitate a porn movie. If Adults don't talk and teach kids about sex than vivid entertainment and tracy morgan will. I read 12 year olds are the new age group to lose their virginity. Anyway locking up 18 year olds for recieving a "sext" and sending them to jail to get an anal education from pedophiles and rapists just doesn't seem like the wise let alone the right thing to do. Do other countries have this problem? Or are we vilanizing technology, remember Reagan had the entire porn industry audited by the IRS. Did that deter anyone. I think this is here to stay, maybe att could offer a program that emails all the text messages that the kids sends to them so the parents can deal with the problem before the legislature and judges do. Freedom of speech is at issue but if the parent pays for underage childrens phone service then why not email text messages to the parents. Then teens can go back to rounding the bases on the weekend like in the old days without incriminating evidence...lol. God I hope I have sons...

OK so I know Isaac and have known him for many years and was with him for about a year. He was never ever like that and the Isaac I knew wouldnt do anything so bad as to force a girl to do sexual acts on him. He didnt need to force anyone. as bad as that sounds. and how in the hell can you force someone over the phone to send pictures. The girls were obviously stupid and said ok I will but made it seem much worse. And the 14 or 15 year old girl that said he forced her to do stuff.. shes one of those girls that doesnt get her way or whatever then she is willing to make up lies and get "revenge". And he doesnt deserve any of this. And im not just saying this crap cuz I know him and what not. ITs messed up that they are using him as an example. They waited till he was 18 to get him for adult charges and send him to jail. I have talked to him many times about this situation and im pretty good as to tell when he is lying. When you have known someone for so long its easy to tell when they are BSing you. And I can honestly say I know that he is innocent and does not deserve it. But theres nothing I can do about it now. Just stay by his side and be there for him every step of the way and stop whoever tries to get in the way. Plain and simple.
