Smartphones to Overtake Desktop PCs by 2011, Say Analysts

Remember how some time ago, we started to hear that Japanese people primarily used cell phones to access the Internet, rather than computers? And remember how we thought that seemed kinda ridiculous and impractical?
Yeah.
According to a report by Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) analyst Mike Abramsky, smartphone sales will surpass PC sales worldwide by the end of 2011, right around 400 million units a year, for those keeping score at home.
"Given the higher margins, smartphones offer the biggest opportunity for manufacturers," Carolina Milanesi, research director at consultancy firm Gartner, told PC World. "It is the fastest growing market segment and the most resistant to declining average selling prices." Unsurprisingly, RBC sees Apple's iPhone and RIM's BlackBerry as the leaders for the foreseeable future, but is rather cold on Nokia's current situation.
PC manufacturers are well aware of this trend. Both Asus and Dell have recently begun to bring smartphones into China (where much of the growth will take place, obviously), and Acer plans to bring its three latest smartphones to market this month. We can't help but think of a time when eating raw fish on top of rice seemed gross. [From: PC World]

Is this a big deal? People replace their phones every two or three years.

I will always prefer a laptop over a smartphone. The screen is much bigger. And I only use the computer when I am at home.

For those that live on the road or on the run this is good news.
