Writer Evan Ratliff Has Vanished and He'll Pay You $5K to Find Him
Evan Ratliff knows how to pull a good disappearing act. For the August issue of Wired Magazine, Ratliff outlined the best way to literally disappear, citing the case of Matthew Alan Sheppard, a health and safety manager who faked his own death for insurance money, as a way to highlight the impossible possibilities of trading in an old identity. The digital age, with Google and social networking, makes it almost impossible to be completely fingerprint-free, but it also means its easier to create fake identities, or hack into someone else's. So Evan Ratlff hatched a plan. His friends at Wired would provide the publicity, but he would do the hard work. He has volunteered all of his information: his name, height, weight, Twitter account, e-mail addresses, even his likes and interests. Then, for one month, from August 15 to September 15, he will disappear.
Ratliff lives in San Francisco and has given the magazine full access to his debit card information, which has tracked purchases like buying goods at Best Buy or a money transfer from checking into savings. Everything is there for the savvy spy to use, and the lucky investigator will get five thousand dollars and an interview in Wired.
Yes, every trick a clever hacker can use, Ratliff will use. On August 18th, the vanished writer was determined to be hiding under an IP blocker called Tor. He might drop fake clues. Wired has set up Twitter accounts and the hash tag #vanish to help people get together and voice their assumptions, but after giving the basic truths (height, weight, email address, age, location), Ratliff may lie, or at least create a ruse to keep 'investigators' from following his trail.
Is it possible to find a man in 30 days by only knowing his digital identity and the basic facts about him? In Ratliff's piece 'Gone Forever: What Does It Take to Really Disappear,' he mentions that people get sloppy. Even pre-paid phones, hidden IP addresses, and an erasure of self doesn't stop the impulse to monitor the chase or contact loved ones. So for those in the pursuit, stay vigilant. Ratliff doesn't have anything to lose besides a bet, so a misstep could be your ticket to five grand. [From: Wired.com]
Death of Print
Elle Girl
In April 2006, Elle Girl's print edition was closed down, but the Web site lives on at ellegirl.com.
CosmoGirl
Though it will be folded into Seventeen magazine, the teen version of Cosmopolitan will publish its last print issue in December 2008. It will live on at CosmoGirl.com.
Christian Science Monitor
Founded in 1908 by Mary Baker Eddy, this venerable paper will move all its daily content to the Web starting in 2009, though it will still publish a weekly print version.
Radar Magazine
Was it too snarky for its own good? We'll never know, but this modern-day successor to '80s-era Spy magazine shut down in October. AMI, owner of the National Enquirer, bought RadarOnline.com, however, which will focus on celebrity gossip a la TMZ.com.
US News and World Report
Once a serious competitor to Time and Newsweek, US News and World Report is now best known for its College guides, which it will continue to publish. The weekly newsmagazine, however, will be turned into a monthly, and all daily operations are moving to the Web at usnews.com.

Sorry but 5K is not worth the effort even if I wanted to find him. I agree if people are really out there looking for him, they should be searching at the same time a "REAL" missing child. You know I just read this article and I have no idea who he works for or why he is doing that...see not that interested to even pay attention to details. And, after taxes on the 5K, I think I will just stay a home on the AC and let someone else waste their time.

Osama has been missing for how many months? United States intelligence is spending so much money to find him, along with their technology. This is not a big deal.

See, with the picture he's already fooling many people. He's not really in the ocean i bet. While everybodys in the ocean, hes on land...its easy to dissapear when only 5 ppl are lookin for you, come on now.
rjstein42Aug 23rd 2009 1:08PM
judging from this picture, i'd say he's somewhere near the ocean

You know, I am really glad to see people thinking here. I think that this could actually inspire a group of people to start a web request to help search for missing persons, including children. Anyone who has time and can help would be welcomed...and there could even be a reward of 5k, for those motivated by money. I wonder how many missing persons could be found this way.Maybe even a realty show...since that seems to be the unfortunate wave of the future.

a good place to hide that looks like the background in this picture would be SE Alaska. with his knowledge of small boats, there are plenty of small islands here where he could hide, and very few State Troopers go into these places to look for someone. there are alot of veterans living on these islands who do not want anyone around them and they are armed. as they do not have TV or internet they would'nt know who he was or even if he is wanted

I've never heard of this guy and don't care if he disappears or not. Besides, it's not that hard to disappear. Just ask a friend if you could stay at their house and pay them cash for food and all other costs you might occur. Since everything is in your friend's name you don't leave any paper or electronic trail, and nobody will find you as long as you stay inside.
But, going by the picture of this guy, my guess is that he will stay on a boat, cruising up and down the West Coast and popping up in small towns(where nobody knows his face) every now and then to fill his supplies.

I found him he is here in New Albany, In. At my house actually, but don't know for how long, maybe another 24-36 hrs. Here is 1 clue... Rainbow, ( new & old ).
sirmixelotAug 23rd 2009 4:45PM
he will be very easy to find......just go to Beira Mar Ave in Fortaleza, Ceara Brazil and watch for him to cross the street going to the beach. Easy as falling off a log.

The boat is a flats or bass boat for shallow water-I noticed trolling motor is not in water,my guess is someone is using a pole platform to push-the fishing rig is fairly light with shartreuse plastic bait, but could handle a 25lb fish. Rain in backgroud is typical Florida in afternoon. Lake Okeecobee
MicheleAug 23rd 2009 5:20PM
He could stay at home and not go out for a month and nobody would know the difference.
HoustonvampAug 23rd 2009 5:33PM
First of all some of you need to reread the article again. He is trying to prove a point. Can a person disappear! and he is offering you money prove his point (If you can find him.) Second, I think his offer of $5K isn't enough to get me out of bed. Now if he is really serious to excite someone to challange him then make it worth someones effort say $5 million.
DeanAug 23rd 2009 6:25PM
Never heard of him.
