Woman Driven to Nose Job by Mean Facebook Comment

There are lots of mean-spirited people out there. Some even feel it necessary to take uncalled-for taunts online and broadcast them on sites like MySpace and Facebook for some sort of attention. And, unfortunately, some individuals are particularly sensitive to heartless ribbing and react in drastic ways.
Take, for instance, Caerphilly, South Wales resident Lowri Ryland, a 21-year-old law school graduate, whose "friend" posted this comment in response to a picture she'd posted on Facebook: "With a nose that big you should wear a mask to cover it up." Ryland's reaction was not to find a new friend, or to voice how insulting she found the comment. Instead, she immediately withdrew £3,500 (almost $6,000) from her savings account and made an appointment with a plastic surgeon.
Two weeks later, she had surgery to make her nose smaller and straighter. As karma would require, a few weeks later, she ran into the "friend" who inspired this act of vain insanity. The "friend" apologized, but Ryland didn't feel it was necessary. She told the Telegraph, "I feel as if she really did me a big favor!"
After the surgery, Ryland was confident enough to enter the Miss Caerphilly pageant, where she finished in the top three.
We don't know who is worse: the clearly insensitive and thoughtless "friend," or the incredibly insecure Ryland, who let a Facebook comment drive her to cosmetic surgery. [From: Telegraph]
Weirdest Techie Heists and Scams
Elderly Amish Man Caught on Film With Prostitute, Blackmailed
When a 75-year-old Amish widower slept with a prostitute, he -- we feel certain -- felt pretty bad about it the next morning. As if that guilt weren't enough for the old man, the prostitute and her boyfriend demanded $67,000 from him, claiming that they had filmed the scene with wall-mounted cameras and would upload the recording to the Internet. The pair was later arrested and, we can only imagine, the Amish man abhorred technology more than ever.
Bank Robber Gets Away With the Help of Craiglist
In October, a bank robber -- wearing a safety vest, blue shirt, face mask and goggles -- eluded police with the help of Craiglist. Just outside the bank, while the robbery was in progress, stood a group of men who were responding to a Craiglist day labor opportunity. As the advertisement required, they were all wearing safety vests, blue shirts, face masks and goggles.
Nude New Zealander Arrested After Responding to Fake Sexy Text Message
Late in 2007, a Wellington, New Zealand man received a racy text message from two anonymous "ladies," giving him only an address and a request that he show up naked. Well, he indeed showed up naked... at the home of one appalled, unsuspecting New Zealander. Both the nude Romeo and the sadistic texter were arrested, though neither were prosecuted.
Fake Craiglist Ad Costs Man Most of What He Owns
Last Spring, a post appeared on an Oregon Craigslist board stating that the owner of a specific house was leaving all of his worldly possessions (still in said house) to whoever wanted them. When homeowner Robert Salisbury rushed home -- on a tip from a woman suspicious about the offer of a free horse -- he found his house being ransacked by 30 strangers. We suggest he take that horse and collect some vengeance Clint Eastwood-style.
17-Year-Old Jailed for Stealing Virtual 'Furniture'
When a 17-year-old Dutch boy hacked into several accounts on the Second Life-style site 'Habbo' in 2007, the the law got involved. The boy was discovered to have stolen $5,800 worth of virtual furniture and knick-knacks. Apparently, crime -- whether actual or virtual -- does not pay.
Phishers Going After Your Phones in New 'Vishing' Trend
Over the past year, sneaky spammers have begun to forsake the worn-out territory of e-mail in favor of cell phones' fertile frontier. The result? "Vishing." Get it? Voice mail + phishing. It might be more ominous if it didn't sound like a James Bond villain saying, "Wishing."
Burglars Break Into Restaurant, Steal HDTV, Leave Money / Food Behind
Around Halloween of last year, a truckload of thieves drove into -- that's right, into -- a Pennsylvania Mexican restaurant, where they -- apparently uninterested in the cash register -- stole a mid-grade 47-inch HDTV and fled the scene. We've all heard about how this generation is lacking in ambition, but this generation's thieves, too?

More likely, the comment was the straw that broke the camel's back.
I 'd bet money that this woman was very unhappy with her nose before she ever uploaded that photo.

TJ -
I am certain you are correct but her friend was no friend! Now that this young woman has rid herself of unwanted flesh from her nose she should now cut out that unneccessary flesh from her social circle!
Sprinkle CookieAug 15th 2009 5:36PM
She could have given me the $6000 and I would have written flowery compliments all over the place! :) She probably did have a problem with her nose, but c'mon! The friend could have found a better way to encourage her friend to improve her looks and not insult her on a public forum like that. Geez!
(Oh, and you people hawking your "Ass-Berry" juice...Go away, already!!!)

Some times the truth hurts , and some times the truth helps ...
RtwochachaAug 13th 2009 8:29PM
Either way you want to look at it this was a total waste of space and time. Both obviously have issues. I think I would have saved myself a lot of money and punched this so called friend in the nose and let her spend the money having hers reconstructed. With all the things in this world that we should be concerned with this is farthest thing I would concern myself with.
Au NaturelAug 13th 2009 9:00PM
They both are dumb. I would have hit 'delete' and cut off contact with that loser. And weak minded people like Ryland need to stay off the internet.
haveletgothecoatAug 13th 2009 10:53PM
I'll bet they both voted for Obama. Morons, morons - everywhere!
xjeanie27xAug 15th 2009 2:11PM
Idiot...they are from the UK.
You're one of those morons...
baileyjane315Aug 15th 2009 4:23PM
I didn't vote for Obama either, but comments like this are unnecessary as this has nothing to do with politics. People like you are what gives everyone who didn't vote for our President a bad name. By the way, smartass, the story says she's a resident of South Wales. Get your facts straight, you moron.
CalabazaAug 15th 2009 5:03PM
Speaking of morons, the girl was from South Wales, idiot. She couldn't have voted for Obama.
sdaven5191Aug 15th 2009 7:56PM
Including the one staring back at you when you look in the mirror? The people in this particular article are from SOUTH WALES, you simpleminded twit. It's people like you - who are just pissy because their candidate didn't win the election - that take every opportunity to display your raging ignorance at every opportunity. You just broke the rule - "Its better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to open your mouth and remove all doubt." I bet you do that on a regular basis.

Yes never change who you are nobodys perfect and if you think you are id like too meet you so i can tell you all your faults.
Margaret MillerAug 15th 2009 3:51PM
NO ONE is perfect until you can walk on water as Jesus did. People are mean spirited. They are probably so unhappy with themselves that they have to strike out at others in order to feel good. They suck.
starlightAug 15th 2009 4:00PM
you need to stop worrying what other people think only "You" can make "You" happy.
Raejean FrenchAug 15th 2009 4:37PM
I agree that the "friend" was the ugly lump of flesh she really needed to have cut out of her life.
And I hope that rhinoplasty was something Lowri Ryland had already considered on her own before the rude, insensitive and tactless remark pushed her to do something about it.
DavidAug 15th 2009 5:18PM
I'm going to quote Elenor Rosavelt. "Nobody can make you feel inferior without your concent"
drdarwinnAug 15th 2009 6:50PM
Just the other day I saw some normal size women...but they had that hump in their nose that is odd looking. I like that perfect cute nose.
angieAug 15th 2009 6:59PM
Change your profile picture not your nose
