Cop Attacks Man for Facebooking His Wife

According to Your4State.com, Lieutenant John Sherman, while off-duty, confronted Larry "Tike" Murphy about the messages last Thursday. After a heated exchange, Sherman allegedly punched Murphy in the face and back, and ripped his shirt (and right by the Martinsburg Church of Christ, no less). As a result, Sherman was placed on administrative leave and charged with battery. According to court documents, Sherman "did not believe it was right that another man was communicating with his wife by Internet-sending some of the things he was sending to her."
Sherman posted bond Monday, and the Martinsburg Police Department says it has launched an administrative investigation into the attack. At the very least, Sherman's lost some friends, since reports say the men's wives are (or were) best friends. At the most, he's lost a career, and maybe a wife, too. [From: Your4State.com]

It was only a matter of time before some numbskull criminal stole a GPS-equipped car or phone, but we didn't expect someone to steal live GPS units. A group of crooks in Lindenhurst, NY swiped 14 functioning GPS devices from the Town of Babylon Public Works. Understandably, authorities had no trouble tracking them down.

Later, when the victim went online and downloaded her data to transfer it to a new phone, Gary's mug popped up. The rest, as they say, is history.

Because the stolen Mac was running Back to My Mac, the victim was able to log into the computer remotely and snap a picture of the thief. Turns out the thieves were "friends" who had visited the victim's apartment several weeks earlier.

Typical cop. Glad he was busted. All cops should take notice. America is fed up with cop bullies and will not take it anymore. Can't tell the cops from the criminals except for the badge.

Next time you are in an accident or need help, call someone else and see who cares. You are a total Butt head

It's not even about a cop. Any man would have been just as upset, no matter what kind of position he holds. You can bash the cop all you want....but that's the least of it.

I totally agree. The idiots that are taking up for him don't realize that his job is to enforce the law, not break it. By accepting the job as a police officer he accepted the responsibility of being more than just the average 'guy'.

First, this is NOT a typical cop response. Although there are a few stinkers who deserve to be weeded out and whose bad behavior gets press coverage, there are many more out there who care about the law and the people they protect. You do not risk your life every day when you go to work. Your wife, if you have one, does not worry every time the phone rings that someone is calling to tell her that her husband has been shot or killed. You did not have to pull a drowned 2 year old out of drainage ditch because no one was watching him. You do not have to confront a 10 year old with a gun under his shirt, ponying drugs to the other side of the neighborhood. You do not have to attend the funeral of a fellow cop who was ambushed (while answering a fake distress call) by gang bangers whose inititation into the gang is to kill a cop. You do not have to wait for an ambulance with a badly wounded man who was knifed for his shoes. You do not have to go on a domestic battery call only to be attacked by the wife whose arm was broken and eyes blackened by her drunken, abusive spouse. You do not have to make a high speed emergency run to the hospital with a sexually abused baby that dies in your arms before you reach the hospital. You do not have to go to court to testify against a dealer who sells meth to school children only to have the witnesses disappear or refuse to testify and you watch the dealer go free to kill more children with drugs. For every cop who cannot deal with this kind of pain and stress and crosses the line, there are a thousand more out there on the street, day after day, protecting the rest of us while being verbally condemned by short sighted idiots. The next time you need help, call a drug dealer or gang banger and see how fast they come to your aid.

Howlar, I am a police officer and I dont think you realize that police officers are human we all make mistakes just when we make them it makes for bigger press. If you had done the same thing i promise you it wouldn't make the news. Yes this guy should of known better but you cant tell me you haven't lost control.
As a police officer I can tell you some of the things I see from day to day would give you nightmares trust me, I get them sometimes. My wife is my support she is what keeps me together day in and day out. If I found unappropiate messages between my wife and someone else I might loose it to.
Many guys I know that arn't cops but construction workers, bankers, computer techs, etc. would probably do exactly what this cop did.
Am I for what he did? No, he should of shown self restraignt and talked with his wife first, but he didn't, he broke the law and he is paying for it just like any one else.

EJHunter,
Nobody's debating whether or not your job is difficult. Everyone's job is. What is of concern, however, is that police and district attorneys seem to think that every member of the criminal justice system is somehow above the law. What this often translates to is the police driving around, sirens blaring, indiscriminately beating the crap out of & killing people. Later on, in court, when it comes time for prosecution, because as you say - "cops are people too"... oh, what's this? There's "not enough evidence" to convict a police officer for any wrongdoing in really any case but the most insane, and the ones that are the most in the media spotlight. Stuff like this happens all the time, and I don't even need to explain it because you know exactly what I'm talking about. It is a common perspective among DA's that "we don't prosecute police officers, we prosecute criminals". That's the problem people have with police officers, Mr. Hunter. Well, that and the fact that police are the biggest a-holes on the planet.
Cheers :)

I am going through the same thing. My wife of 11 years and 6 children met someone on Facebook/Yahoo Instant Messenger and now wants a divorce and wants to be with this guy she met. Who knows if it is even a guy or a prisoner at a Mental Hospital. Oh and she is pregnant with my 7th child so I think its mine...and she won't tell me why or how come she feels the need to ruin a family and run away with someone she doesnt even know.
I can relate to the Cop in every way. I'd do the same as the Cop ! The wife is to blame for this...why should her husband be forced to choose? Our society is messed up. Women are cheating on their spouses in record numbers. Soldiers go to war and come back to a woman that has broken her vows of marriage while our soldiers have been fighting for freedoms. Women need to wake up ! Life is not always about screwing ! Have a heart !

since more men cheat then women, does that mean we should hold every member of your gender responsible for every ill that a male does? especially since in both your case and this cop's it was the woman who did wrong, not the guy. he didn't make you any promises. though from the woman bashing in your post, i don't blame your wife for running as fast as she can!
Hugh said 2:49PM on 8-12-2009
Dude, I sympathize but what is he giving her that you aren't? If it's only physical, which is what it sounds like from your next-to-last sentence, then you have no excuse. There are things you can get to, ah, "improve" your performance. To put it bluntly, if you aren't supplying the salami, don't be surprised when she starts shopping at another deli. On the other hand, if you're just an a-hole, there's no fix for that. Sorry.
lcblomquist said 2:58PM on 8-12-2009
Hmm, everyday this cop deals with people who state that they "lost it" because their spouse cheated or was "talking" to someone on the computer. What is good for the goose is good for the gander.... NO EXCUSES!!! Cop did the crime and cop should do the time.

Yeah it is the wifes/womans fault. Seems to me she got smart & dumped your women are chattle idea. Good for her.
Kimberly said 3:44PM on 8-12-2009
How do any of you know what the emails were about? It doesn't state that anywhere. It also doesn't say she was leaving him for the friend. Maybe this guy just had too much stress built up and instead of communicating with his wife acted out. He shouldn't have been going through her email anyway. That just shows the state of mind he was in. Probably stressed, not at home much and started getting jealous or something.
Duece said 3:51PM on 8-12-2009
It is not only women that are cheating on their husbands. It is just as easy for a man to meet someone online and leave his wife and family. I see it happen all of the time.
